headlight vs cowl intakes - bricktron - 10-27-2017

i see two rather different "cold" intakes on W123s, the rubber scoop above the headlight and the round port in the fender cowl. maybe one came after a generational change or with certain engines, not sure. my car had the scoop, but i have been using a cone.

was the cowl intake an upgrade over the scoop, either because it's bigger or because it draws colder or cleaner air?

edit: this post suggests there may be more than one kind of headlight scoop.

Scoops were better, the Cali intake cars had the intake from the RH wheel well as a compromise

thank you. i guess any non-cali examples retaining the filter airbox still use the scoop. not sure how much coldness i am missing with the cone, but at least i don't have to consider drilling that big hole.

The W123 fender mounted airbox is re-clocked by the factory to draw air from the front scoop in the 85 W126 300SD.

I've modded my 83 W126 300SD to accept an 85 fender mounted airbox because I got tired of replacing the stock air cleaner brackets for the stock engine mounted airbox.

I have a W123 fender mounted airbox for you if you need it, its a true cold air filter that flows more cfm than most cone filters.

In rainy weather, there is also a greater likelihood of hydrolock when using a cone filter versus an enclosed airbox.
Soon, I also need to switch from a cone filter to an enclosed airbox on my 78 W116 300SD to get more cfm and protection from hydrolock.

thanks! my goal is visual subtlety and minimal tubing, probably a cylinder shape right up in front. sticking with the cone is easier, but as you said, riskier. i'm not convinced that this one is so effective anyway.

i was thinking of building an inline airbox out of ABS to fit right in the gap between the turbo and the scoop, or maybe skip the scoop and have it open on top an inch short of the hood pad.
