1987 300TD Wagon with 5 Speed Manual - Questions! - jonbobshinigin - 10-19-2017
Hey guys...I sold my wagon a couple years back because it was sitting with busted #14 head. Super sad day but I couldn't just let her rot so I had to let her go...fortunately I found someone willing to invest into her and care for her. Last week I bought her back and she now has a brand new AC unit, a #17 head, AND a 5 Speed from a 1987 300D. I will tell the full story in another post later! I owned her for eight years before selling her!
So...I have some questions. From what I can tell it has the 717.411. The transmission shifts alright, clutch does not slip, but it is a bit quirky. Starting off in first, it does not like any acceleration; I let the clutch out and she gets rolling just fine and then a give some acceleration. Interestingly, I couldn't get it to pull up onto ramps for anything today. Yet normal driving there is no slippage at all! I could smell the clutch after this. The car very much prefers higher RPMS as anything below 2500 isn't great and its rather jerky. Lots of lugging in RPM range less than 2000 in most gears. Shifting is very positive with no slippage and even has a solid clunk as it enters next gear. I am no novice to driving manual either.
I know very little about manual transmission however so what can be done here? With the car I also purchased another clutch assembly which is the stronger model apparently. All in all I am SO thrilled to have probably the only 5 Speed W124 Wagon stateside, and of course, having my baby back!

Are you complaining about a lack of power and the jerking or just the jerking?
Unless you have an electronic pump or a mechanical pump that came out of a manual trans car, it's gonna jerk.
*edit* I've also heard a dual mass flywheel stops the jerking.

The power is sufficient but its super jerky. Can you expound on why this is? Like I said, my understanding of manuals is very limited! Thank you so much.

The rack in the injection pump oscillates. If you have a torque converter or a dual mass FW, the torque waves get asbsorbed. MB made a device to dampen or stop rack oscillation on the MT cars. Baldur's controller can manage rack oscillation on an electronic pump. I also see that DPuk (sp?) made a bling blang billet AL device to help with the jerking. They posted about it on the STD FB page.

Old thread, but "jerking" could be caused by many things in manual trans setup. Need some clarification on "not liking acceleration".
