OM60x Exhaust Manifolds - Bummer-Bob - 06-06-2017

Anyone know if there is there any difference in the exhaust manifolds between US- & Euro-spec engines in the OM60x family? If there are differences, are the manifolds interchangeable, or are the dimensions different? I know that the flange and bolt pattern to the head is the same, I'm more concerned with the overall shape, and where in the engine bay the turbo flange ends up.

Thanks!

You need to check the exhaust manifold sticky.

I read through the entire thing, and I saw mention of Euro manifolds and US manifolds, which is why I ask if they're interchangeable. Previously, I wasn't aware of any differences. The thread doesn't really talk about what those differences are, and for the '602 specifically, there is just one manifold shown. What I don't know is, if that means there was only one manifold for the engine, or if that's the only one the poster could find pictures of.

I'm pretty sure the 602s were all the same, the US spec probably had an egr port and euro had it capped. Only the 603 had the goofy two piece maze of cast iron in the earlier models.

Thanks. That's kind of what I was thinking/hoping.

Huge differences. I have a euro 603 manifold with hx30 fs if you are interested.

RE: OM60x Exhaust Manifolds - hooblah - 06-11-2017

Didn't the us versions have trap oxidisers? European versions do not.

RE: OM60x Exhaust Manifolds - awsrock - 06-11-2017

No trap ox on the 602, just the 603 up to 1992 in the US

Mine is a '602, thanks. You know anything about if there are "huge differences" for the 5-cyl manifolds, US vs Euro?

Your manifold for mild power gain like up to 200 hp should be fine. I am using it with dieselmeken 7.5 mm pump and original turbo. It works great just need to keep in check my enthusiasm. Factory automatic is major limiting factor how much power you can use.

Are you driving an OM602 with 722.4 tranny? I just ordered a 7.5mm Dieselmeken pump, too, so I'd be very eager to hear more of your impressions. I'm having it set for 90cc of fuel. You think stock manifold and turbo are good to go? Are you intercooling, or even monitoring EGTs?

RE: OM60x Exhaust Manifolds - awsrock - 06-12-2017

I would intercool, especially if you are going to run the stock turbo, which I also would recommend upgrading. I ran my 90cc pump without an intercooler for a day and the intake was hot as hell after flooring it once down the street. Now with IC my intake stays cool to the touch all the time regardless of how hard I run. 90cc isn't a lot so as long as you aren't in some kind of cross desert race you shouldn't need to worry about egt.

Any tips on intercool fitment? The W124 has space for a small SMIC in the right wheel well. An FMIC might fit, but it seems like most people think the bumper requires trimming (which I'm not necessarily opposed to). I guess a lim enough intercooler might fit, and in fact I know of one seller that has one that he claims to work. What about modifying the intake manifold to accept the runner from the intercooler?

My main issue with the intercooler is the fact that there is no plug-and-play solution...I don't mind some improvisation, but when it comes to fabrication-type stuff, my inability to weld becomes a problem. I guess I could maybe take the intake manifold and some sort of flange to a machine shop and have them figure it out - but I'm also nervous about screwing it up (e.g., with non-optimal intake flow or something).

RE: OM60x Exhaust Manifolds - awsrock - 06-12-2017

Can't really help you on the IC stuff because I have a w126. Everyone hates the US bumpers those had, but they have a ton of room for ICs so I was able to stuff a 27x9 in there with very minimal cutting and none of it sticks out.

A side mount probably isn't the best, but it depends on what your goals are. I have a Saab Blackstone IC that would probably fit in there if you were interested.

As for intake, you can always cut a hole on the other side and slide a 3" aluminum pipe in there, but I would recommend you get it welded. I brazed mine, which was strong enough to keep it in there, but there were some pinhole leaks that I am still dealing with that I use gasket maker on...it works but it is annoying and doesn't last forever.

Oh, one more question - did yo have any issues with the new IP playing nice with vacuum control of the transmission (i.e., shift timing and quality)?

RE: OM60x Exhaust Manifolds - Anjay1 - 06-14-2017

Yes, i do have intercooler. It is from Volvo 900 series. Trany is 722.4. On first try it started slipping. I raised pressure and it is holding so far. Turbo is controlled by manifold pressure with Hobbs pressure switch. Intake manifold factory and has 3" pipe welded to it. Exhaust Manifold is factory without EGR.
Turbo without control will deliver 29 psi. I reduced to 20 because I was blowing inter cooler hoses off.
On initial punch it is puff of black and once boost kicks in it cleares up. In my estimation I might have 150 hp maybe. Car is fun to drive responsive and fast. To my surprise fuel economy improved as well in spite of spirited driving. I seldom reve up over 3000 rpm. By then I am in 4th gear already and going 140 km. So I don't do it to often.
I played with timing quite a bit. I have clamp on piezo sensor. At idle it is set to 21 deg. btdc.

What are the dimensions of the core? Inlet/outlet diameter? Same side inlet and outlet, right?
