Possible to have no smoke High HP diesel? - hummermaniac88 - 03-13-2017

Hi there,

So I finally got my OM606 HX40W 8MM OM603 pump with 220CC (Culprit) running good.

It's smoking tons, and rolling coal isn't my thing. It's really dangerous for people in the back following. Now can I have no smoke and keep my power output?

I suspect my 220CC tuning is WAY too much. What's the ideal CC for high HP at 35PSI?

Thanks guys,

just turn down the maximum fuel setting on your alda until it no longer smokes under full boost.if its smoking a lot while its building boost you might try installing a restrictor in the line feeding the external alda actuator to slightly delay the fueling increase note however this will increase the feeling of turbo lag. as for the exact cc per boost thats not something you can easily say without knowing the exact VE of your particular engine and having an accurate compressor map of you turbo to plot out the exact mass air flow into the engine. i do know these IDI mercedes pre-chamber engines can run visually clean up to around 15-16:1 air fuel ratio. with any diesel tuning well beyond stock power its going to be quite difficult to prevent any smoke however you can limit it to brief puffs before the turbo spools with proper tuning. in your case i might consider going compound turbo or to something smaller than an HX40 as the lag from that as a single is probably causing a good deal of your smoke issues.

What is your power goal overall? A few people on here have managed 400-440 hp on a 606 with 120-130cc and maybe 28 psi, so 220 is really a lot to have to burn. If you can, more power to you, but otherwise turning it down should still warrant a lot of power and much less smoke.

Adjust the ALDA down, that's what its there for..

Thanks for fast response guys. Well I'm not smoking under boost, only when building up boost. So taking off until 2.5k to 3k rpm I'm smoking tons then burns clean.

Should I opt for a smaller turbine housing (hybrid hx35 hx 40) turbo to spool earlier?

I see Dieselmeken has a two stage ALDA now. Might be worth looking into. Yes a faster spooling turbo will help, but the main issue is your fuel is not being restricted until boost comes up

220cc is like some sort of marketing joke. No om606 can burn that cleanly, at any boost level worth talking about. So you need to turn the pump max fueling stop down.

HX40W with good manifolds and exhaust can burn 160-170cc max. With 190cc you get 600whp and over 700hp from engine but you need huge turbo for that, something like hx52pro or similar.
220cc is really marketing joke. I also had 220cc pump with hx52 and even on 3.5 bar I had crazy black smoke when pump was maxed out. I made 544whp with hx52.

With ALDA you have more or less smoke anyway, it is working almost ON-OFF and usually maxes fuel out on 1.5bar boost. So when it is spooling with huge turbo it is overfuelling on spoolup moment. I have tried to adjust it but it will smoke anyway. With right adjustment there's almost no smoke before boost and also no smoke on max boost but it's still smoking on spoolup.

I think an EDC superpump would be the way to get maximum power with no smoke. If you had a rolling road and the chip tuner there you could get it spot on and get more smoke free power than from a mechanical pump I would imagine.

I like r3350 idea. restrict airflow to Alda actuator. find orifice proper size to put in line with boost line to alda, to slightly slow the Alda rate. otherwise, ohlins makes steering stabilizers with variable damping valve. this could be used to tune the Alda rate by attaching externally to the fueling lever or the Alda rod.

If you put restrictor then it will work only on full throttle pull not on constant half throttle accelerating. For example on constant 2bar boost it will deliver max fuel anyway, it just makes little smoke delay on spoolup. Maybe some kind of manual boost controller works but it's hard to make it move exactly right.

I still like my motorcycle steering damper idea. But now everyone serious is going for the EDC pump, 7-8mm elements, DSL1 and the VNT controller from Ole Fejer, which seems like a nice way to do things.
