Is it possible to remove power steering on an om606 motor?

The belt routing might be difficult, you may need to put an idler in place of the PS pump.

Yeah I need that as an idler, no other way to put and belt on while utilizing the tensioner. I took the pump off and put bracket and pulley back on. Is the bearing lubricared by the ps fluid? Will it wear out without that?

Not sure about how the bearing on the PS pump is lubricated, however you could just mount a plate with an idler pulley in place of the pump. That would be both lighter and more reliable.

If you remove the AC compressor too then you don't need an idler, just a shorter belt over 4 pulleys that are left.

Care to share a drawing of what you are suggesting?

I agree Petar, less pulleys will simplify belt route maybe making tensioner unnecessary in a sense? Though, I will only have 3 pulleys now. Alternator, waterpump and main harmonic pulley. I also seen a dieselmeken video where they also did not use tensioner assembly. Tonight I removed power steering bracket, I already removed AC long ago then took measurement with string and got a couple small belts from autozone and will try and slip on one that's an acceptable fit. I will do it tomorrow and let you know. Alan, I will take pic but for some reason my photos haven't been attaching on this site but I will try again tomorrow if I get done work in time to tinker on it.

I will try to find a photo or draw it

This is stock routing with no AC and no PS.

I don't speak German, but as far as i understood you need 21.36x995 or 21.36x1015 belt. Note this is for OM601 but it should be the same for OM606

RE: Delete power steering? - AlanMcR - 02-14-2017

I imagine that it would work. There very little belt wrap around the alternator, so slippage under load would be likely. Also the normal routing around the tensioner has the belt folded into a U shape. My trigonometry is failing me at the moment, but it seems like the tangential application of the belt around the tensioner would result in less tension on the belt.

RE: Delete power steering? - BoostedW124 - 02-14-2017

Petar, are you using a ribbed tensioner pulley? The stock one is flat running on the other side of the belt.

RE: Delete power steering? - Petar - 02-15-2017

Good point. I have no idea, it's not mine.
As far as i know this is stock routung for T1 vans, some of them don't have AC nor Power steering stock.

I think for this you would need the complete tensioner off the OM601.
