variety of OM617 tachs - bricktron - 05-09-2016

hi folks, i was butchering a five-cyl tach to convert it when i noticed that the other one i had on hand was different. the VDO part numbers differ as do the signal jacks and circuitboards.

the numbers visible on the two tachs are: 230/154/1 14000Hz, on the one i was cutting up; and 230/107/15  6000Imp., on the one from a cluster which is elsewhere stamped 1982. unfortunately i don't know where the butchered one came from.

do these two units work the same? the numbers 6000 and 14000 sure make me wonder.

cheers!

The one with 14000 is meant for '84-'85 cars with EGR computer. They had a VR sensor on the flywheel with ran off the starter ring teeth. You can bypass the EGR computer however.

I imported one of those, and bought a VR sensor (for a 6BT) myself but haven't quite got to the stage of seeing if it actually works yet...

thanks Scott! since i don't have the flywheel sensor, i guess i need an older tach.... cut up the wrong one. onwards and upwards!

If i remember correct i took a w124 or w201 diesel tacho and installed it in the w123 cluster 1 year ago. Had an om606 in that car from a w124. Only drove some km with it before i sold it.
