Transmission rear housing swap? - Matej - 02-08-2016

Hello,
Is anyone familiar with whether the rear housing from the older manual transmissions such as the 717.412 (W201, W124) can be directly swapped onto the later gearboxes such as the 717.460 (W202, R170)?
I am especially curious if the mechanical speedometer drive gear from the older transmission fits directly into the newer transmission, along with the rear housing, thus making it a plug-and-play fit.
Thank you for any information.

Yes you can. I have done it myself when i took a gearbox from w202 230k and mated it with the rear housing from my 2,6 w201. But some gearboxes from 1,8 engine and 2,0 engine have shorter distance between the shafts and rear housing dosent fit the 717.460 gearbox.

But they still have the same weakspot in 3rd gear as the rest. You are safe below 350hk. Over that you need a 716.6xx or ZF.

And the syncros are crap on the old boxes. Like night and day when mounting a 716.6xx gearbox. Was one of the best upgrades i did on my car.
