'85 300TD Engine Alternatives? - turbojeep - 12-21-2015
Picked up a really clean two tone wagon for a song. However, engine has a bad knock and it seems to have bad/no compression on #2 until warm. After it is up to temp, it is better but still piss poor. I just had the injectors rebuilt by Greazer, which did help significantly reduce the smoke and partial throttle acceleration. The car runs enough to bum around town, but shakes and looks like I'm fogging for mosquitoes still.
I really don't hold out a whole lot of hope for the long term reliability of this current engine, and have started to save for a future engine. But if I'm going to swap an engine, might as well make some more power out of it. I do like the SLS rear end that it has, with leads me to the main question.
Is there a SLS head for the om606 or should I just keep my eyes peeled for a good om617 and use the extra towards a super pump?

Huh? Later engines don't have differing heads.
603 and 606 turbo can make use of twin-pumps (dual unit for PAS & SLS). There's nothing to worry. The solution for driving a hydraulic pump on the 617 is realy - stupid. The dual pumps are bolt-on, same fittings as the PAS-only pumps for cars without hydraulics.

As stated above, there are dual pumps available on models without the sls head which has power steering and suspension pump in one unit.
But your head may still be usable if you stop driving the poor thing around. Then you could just swap bottom end parts or the whole block for a better one.
With the money saved (over buying a new 617 or 606 and PS/SLS pump) you're closer to buying a superpump.
Let me know if you're interested in 617/603/606 turbo motor parts. I've got a little of this & that including a set of new old stock 617 turbo pistons.

Just get a PAS pump from a W210/606 wagon and it has the SLS pump built in as the guys said above.
They are very cheap here in UK (£50GBP) if you get a non-SLS 606.

Your problem is likely in the head. Unfortunately not easy to find d a rebuildable core with the sls mount. Maybe get the later power steering pump and retrofit and use a sedan head instead. Or let the search begin.

Sounds like an easier solution than I had expected. Make sense that they would move away from a specific head for the wagons.
I agree that keeping the 617 would be the easier/cheapest option. I hadn't thought about just swapping the head onto a sedan engine.
I am borrowing a prechamber tool to see if tighting it down with a new collar can save it. When I changed the injetors, I noticed that I was having air *chuff* out. Fingers crossed.
I was hoping it was just running poor from sitting for 2 years, but that probability seems to be slipping.
