Buying a car with NO TITLE?! - CRD4x4 - 08-26-2015

I'm considering trading a car I have for a car that's got no title and was supposedly abandoned.
My intention would be to pull the gas motor and manual trans from the abandoned car (BMW Z3) and swap in a om606 + 6-speed manual.
So...
1) How do I get the car into my name?
2) Will it be exempt from inspection like other diesel powered vehicles?

I'm pretty patient but don't want to get tangled in legal bullshit.

Can it be done (in Maryland USA)?

Depends on your state. Back in the day, I bought a 1954 Packard Convertible in the state of Delaware from a chicken farmer for $500.00 Best car deal ever. Sad I let that car go. Bill of sale, not title. I had to drive the car through the inspection lane or have a Delaware State Trooper visit my house to inspect the car and verify the VIN, et cet. Of course I did the totally unsafe thing back in 1989-90 and had a 5 gallon gas jug in my front seat, and a house electrical switch as my kill switch for my engine taped to the dash to cut the coil wire. Overall, a very easy process and it took around 30 days to get my title. I have a real distaste for government red tape, et cet, so when I say it was OK, it was Ok. Now, flash forward to sunny South Carolina 2012... forget it. About impossible so I let a $9K car go which I could buy for $750 but same deal, no title. Seller was a respectable guy who was not selling me something hot. So, the lesson: check your state rules.

In GA you need a bonded title for any vehicle made after 1985. Easy process, done it twice.

Update: No deal.
As much as I'd love to build a 606 powered z3 the last thing I'd want is to never be able to drive or sell it.

The hunt continues...
