79sd performance - garage - 09-11-2009

What kind of options, if any, do i have for upgrading my W116 suspension?
Im looking for stiffer/sportier suspension, while keeping my close to current(stock) ride height.
Ive considered lowering the car, but im pretty entertained with going over large dips and bumps. Im also eventually interested in flying down some dirt roads=]

As far as springs, ive read gasser coupes have progressive springs, are these worth it if you can find them?
How bout 123wagon coils??

What options do i have for sway bars and other suspension parts?

Also, has anyone thought about replacing there bump stops with those air bump stops that are used on offroad trucks?

Measure the witdh of the torsion bar and pour over the epc and see if it looks like you can mount a 126 sway bar (rear only I'd guess). You can get the 126 in 17mm for the rear. As far as the rest goes, who knows.

RE: 79sd performance - garage - 09-11-2009

Well bad news, im not going to tweak the w116 anymore.
Ill be picking up a w123 (hopefully) soon.
So what about performance as far as they go?

Whats the deal with progressive springs, anyone?
Would they be bolt on deal?or what?
How hard are they to find?

What about sway bar options for the w123?

Any thoughts on replacing the stock bump stops for the air models?
I think they would make a great difference on how much the suspension could handle in rough situations..

Winmutt, whats the deal with the Bilstein HDs, and the Vogtland springs?

The Vogtland Springs were purchased via a group buy on MShop. The rears were cut too much and most people didnt like the ride provided...you can see pics of how bad my car rode in post 10 of this thread:

if you scroll further down, you will see what it looks like as of this afternoon (post 24)

There are several ways people have remedied this. I believe winmutt chopped the fronts to be shorter, he'll chime in with what else, if any he did...I just swapped my rears out today for S600 lowering springs (after another forum member Greasy Beast, swapped them into his car to get rid of the SLS) and so far like the way it handles...and looks

Bilstein HDs are the Heavy Duty version of the shock absorbers. I believe the three level available are comfort, sport and heavy duty

I have the Bilstein HD's and they ride great!!! best shocks I have ever bought!!! comfortable and firm but not ridiculously stiff!

S600 springs you say huh?
So are springs pretty interchangable between MBZ rides?

Is there a big difference between the sport and heavy duty?
I would assume the HD would be better all around right?

Is there quite a noticable difference?
How does it handle being thrown into turns?
Less body roll by chance?

not really, Greasy Beast did quite a bit of research to find out those springs fit, and still took a chance on fit. good thing for him (and me) they worked out great.

yeah, I noticed a difference when I switched from the sports I had before the vogtland swap to the HDs that are in it now... def. better for my personal taste and the copius amount of spare parts/tools/fluids I cart around everywhere.

RE: 79sd performance - willbhere4u - 09-11-2009

It needed shock's but yea I can through it in a corner and it it 10x better than it was less body roll and it is smooth as glass! And I have a 240d with weaker springs and sway bars that also need upgraded to 300d or 300td the wagon springs and sway bars! I got them on eBay for 275 with shipping and they came with the steering stabilizer as well!!!

Are the wagon springs more heavy duty than the coupe or 4door springs?

What about these progressive springs?

RE: 79sd performance - willbhere4u - 09-11-2009

the sway bar is bigger in the wagon or so I have been told! the 240d to 300d the springs are different but I don't know it they are between the 300d and 300td wagon?
