OM606 E300TD Power Steering Pressure - ross - 07-06-2015

Can anyone tell me what the max pressure of the Merc PAS system is? I'm wondering how the output compares to the old Land Rover engine and whether the steering box will take it.

115bar is from the stock w210 e300td pump.
No idea what the land rover uses but you can always regulate it with a bypass valve.
Ive mine connected to a lexus car and runs perfect. But there was a change over at some point in later years cars not just limited to mercedes to run higher pressures like 150-160 Bar so your probably safe.

That should be OK then. The LR boxes don't mind a little over pressure, but will break if loads too much is put through them.

Don't suppose you know the flow rate of the merc pump as well?

no flow rates , just the pressure was written on the pump

There are also PS pumps with 95 bar from W124 which should bolt to OM606...

The standard pressure the boxes are supposed to take is between 70-77kgf/cm2 according to Rave. The upper end of that being 75 bar roughly. I infact checked the pump on the 606 last night and found the sticker stating 115 bar.

Think the pressure would need dropping. The boxes would blow seals at 115 bar IMO.

Have just found this to:

"Nominal delivery pressure 100 bar [1450psi] 8.5 ltrs/min [15.1 pints/min]" Might be fine then at 115. Though the W124 might be a better/safer bet to start with?

There's also a pump from a W201 190 that delivers somewhat less than the W124's. I can check the plate on mine tomorrow if it would help.

Max pressure from pump is not a problem, max pressure will only be when you turn steering wheel to the left or right and hold it locked at turned out position. When wheels are straight or somewhere between oil is ciculating almost without backpressure.

Some guy in this forum modified the pressure relief valve to reduce the pump pressure. It's a simple ball and spring relief valve, just cut down the spring until the desired pressure is reached.
It was the guy with W108 OM606 swap i think.

You are right! Just had a look into EPC; there's pumps with 65 and 85 Bar for W201 Smile

The trouble is in an off-roading situation, yes it's workable to make sure that you don't hold it on full lock, but there are lots of times when the steering is loaded right up. Times such as on slick rock, in deep ruts or when against trees.
