which is better for std 606? - CRD4x4 - 03-17-2015

I have a 606 + 6MT ready for a swap into either:
1998 BMW Z3 3L 5MT
Or
2001 BMW X5 3L 5MT

I have an opportunity for each and could use the X5 more a family but Idk what the awd system can handle.
Any suggestions?!

z3 all day long....

Thanks, but why?
Z3 isnt nearly as practical.
The X5 is very rare with a manual in the states and I'd drive it daily rather than a once-in-a-while convertible. Can I trust the early awd with high torque?
I really am torn on which way to go.

Idk if it's my phone (galaxy x5) or site that's making the text like that but it's maddening.

No idea why your text is like that, what engines came in the x5 in the usa? Same v8 petrol and straight six diesel we had In the uk?

If so you will know the diesel imo is the most boring underpowered 4x4 around, just like the Range Rover with the same engine.

The v8s are fine and sound good!

If I knew I could get a v8 I wouldn't bother with the swap.
Z3 would feel awesome to drive with all that torque +rwd

The X5 wasn't available in a diesel in the states which is why I'm considering buying it and swapping out its gas 3L I6 & replacing it with a boosted 606 & 6-speed. I'd sell the BMW motor & 5-speed to help fund the superpump build and tuning cost.
I'm not saying the z3 wouldnt be fun, but where'd I put the baby seat?

The Z3 would be way more fun! X5's are big heavy SUV's. Honestly I don't think the AWD system in them is all that tough. If yours was a 4.4L or 4.6L that would be preffered, I honestly don't recall if there were driveline differences from 6cyl to V8 driveline but if there was, the V8 stuff would be stronger. I think they used bigger flex disks and what not so there are some differences. I am a former Factory Trained BMW Tech (changed careers). My schooling was over 10yrs ago and i've slept since then. If yours is new enough to use the same X-drive transfer case as the X3's had, those suck, unreliable and weak. The 1st gen E53 X5 had the bigger and stronger New Process transfer cases (these are not divorced t-cases, the are direct mount to trans tailshaft) and didn't see much trouble with them. Did see some front diff's go bad and X5's are notorious for front CV shaft issues. Another problem is the front diff is mounted to the side of the engine oil pan and the right side shaft passes through a tube in the oil pan. That would be a task to solve. Since you did say you had a manual trans, I take it yours is the 3.0L, never saw a manual/V8 X5. You'd have a good deal of work mating that transmission up also + finding a 606 flywheel. Theres a lot of electrical issues to hurdle too. Eliminating the original engine, the DME is of no use and won't function to run other components. Like your climate control "talks" to the DME to run the a/c and things like that. Lot of hurdles making the inst. cluster work too. It would be neat but a LOT of work and some of it pretty troublesome to deal with and the front diff is a big problem since its engine mounted. The oil pan has machined registers for the axle that you must have. Z3 would be a lot easier but still going to have some of the same electrical issues to deal with. Would get good gas mileage in one of those little cars! An E36 would be the same as doing a Z3. E30 would be easiest and awesome!

EXACTLY the info I was hoping for!
Thanks!
The X5 is 1st gen but I didn'tknow about the oilpan interference. That's a major problem.
What kind of electronic issues should I expect when using a 603 mechanical pump in a 98 Z3 if I keep the chassis electronics in place?
