leeking steeringbox after om606 install in w123 - john - 10-19-2014

Hi guys!
Have a problem to sort out...
I tried to start my w123 with om606.962 (powersteeringpump with seperate reservoir) and before it started the lower sealing on my steeringbox exploded HuhSad

What could be the problem. i checked and double checked that the connections was right. this is ok!
then i checked pressure specs and w123 has pressure relifevalve on 65bar and w210 on 115bar.
BUT, this pressure should not happend before steering full in one direction. i barley touch the steeringwheel.
Is there any specs on flowcontrol valve?
where is the pressure relifevalve located?
anyone else had problems??

The older (steel reservoir) pumps operate on lower pressure (youve noticed that already). Just swap it our with an older one..they bolt right up

RE: leeking steeringbox after om606 install in w123 - john - 10-19-2014

its not possible to use this then?
i thought it might be a problem with pressure relife valve stuck in pump?
common fault that this happends?
old pumps seems to operate at 95 bar??

Edit: how old?? w124 om606 old or what?

would this work?

its for: E 200 T M111.940 1996

also sls option which would be nice for me so i can make my sls system work on same pump

The 603 and 602's have the metal reservoir pumps, not sure if the gasburners use the same thing.

Can you use a P/S pump with 2 pressure outlets for SLS? That would rock.

602 and 603 is not multirib puley??

its actually a doubel tandempump so you have 2 inlets and 2 outlets so the oil dont mix. speciel oil for sls and atf for servo. For now i have the original sls-pump machined inside a volvo 850 pump with multirib pulley an mounted instead of the acpump.

RE: leeking steeringbox after om606 install in w123 - stig - 10-20-2014

602 and 603 have multi ribbed belts. Some pumps have different pressures, for example the 460 G pump fitted to the 602na has around 87bar, so you have some options.
It's strange it blew the seal out when not on full lock to activate the relief valve, the return is free? maybe was just coincidence?

maybe. today i have picked up my spare one sp i will change today and check pressures!

Any luck with this john? You have me worried as I'm on track for hooking up my OM606 power steering pump to and ancient W108 steering box!

RE: leeking steeringbox after om606 install in w123 - john - 11-04-2014

havent had any chance to messure yet but i have teared down the old steeringbox!

this is the way i think it works!
IF you have the PS pump from w210 98 and up (separate canister) you have a flowcontrol valve in the pump that makes the basepressure a little to high for the w123 steering box.
On w123 the return outlet on the steeringbox is in direct contact with the low pressure side in the steeringbox by a hole inside the chamber that holds returnflow and adapter for returnhose. This is for lubricating the gearmechanism connecting steeringcollum, output shaft and wormgear, AND beacause its only lowpressure oilseals it will blow the one with biggest pressure holding area against the pressure.
To solve this you have to find a weaker spring for the pump pressure controle valve. I just removed mine for the moment beacause i have fuelpressureproblems to my superpump and also 10 other cars to fix before the old merc is on top of the to do list again.
But before fiddling around i will hoke up a pressuregauge so i can messure base pressure on the lowpressure side.
Hope it helps. when i have found the perfekt solution i will report.
Also i have 2 times 3/8 hydraulic hoses. this is no good beacause it creates backpressure and raise the pressure on the lowpressure side in steeringbox. Maybe this is the problem also?
Good luck if you find the solution first!
