om605 aftermarket tacho - RickyE - 10-01-2014

hello

i was wondering about wiring a aftermarket tachometer up to a om605. Its getting a om602 pump built with 7.5mm elements. Ive been told i need a tacho that connects to the w terminal of the alternator. The bit thats confused me is all of them only say they work with 4,6 and 8 cylinder cars.

i was wondering if the above tachometer would work on my 5 cylinder?

Cheers

An alternator operated rev counter doesn't care about the number of cylinders but it needs to be calibrated for your alternator gearing ratio.
As an alternative, there are universal tachs that require you to fit a magnet to the crankshaft pulley.

I am using a Dakota Digital converter box on my VW diesel, using the W terminal on the alternator. As Baldur noted, the signal will have to be calibrated to match the actual engine speed.

The Dakota Digital box has provisions for adjusting the incoming signal to match up with most common tachometers.
