Turbo on an OM601? - Whizbang - 09-09-2014

Likely not the most common option, but curious about people's experience with turboing the OM601. Reason I ask is since its smaller, its lighter, and thus may be decent for handling. However, I can't find much about it and want to know what im getting into before i go to the junkyard and pull it.

I think is cheaper to buy a OM602 turbo then to turbocharge a OM601 the 602 will fit in a 190 it is only 1 cylinder more

it is cheaper to buy a 420cdi instead of making a superturbodiesel out of a 250D...

use transporter motor it has 2,3 l an has piston cooling?
in my garage ther lies such an motor in the hope there will be anytime a 190D for daily use, with a turbo of the 220cdi OM 611 it can be a good motor

You are a lucky man because you are in Germany and you can chose from a lot of diesel engines. But in California we never got a 601 turbo or any other 4 cylinder turbo diesels

I've read that it's a lot of work and not worth the effort, but there are a few videos on YouTube of the 190D 2.0 with a turbo. So it can and has been done!
Would love to turbo mine some day, just bought my second 190D and having a 5-speed installed that's geared lower than what would have come stock, so it could use some extra power.
Very rare and efficient engine, they only made 10k of the 190D 2.2 for the North American market. I'd snag it even if just to re-sell!

I bet that almost any factory car engine can take a little boost. if your willing to build the manifold and plumb it and willing to adjust the ip to get some more fuel for the turbo then do it. should help midrange effiency and make it awesome. I am currently turboing a 240d, and most people say its not worth it, 2 expsensive, not enough hp, ect. just like that little 601. I bet it'll out mpg a 602, 603, or most stuff up to common rail tho. and i believe that mild boost(no moer then 12 psi) can help a diesel engine last, less WOT, less rpms, ect, cuz you can get power downlow, no shift down(maybe twice) for big hills and it reaises thier effiency in the midranges. as an example, I had a turbo 6.9 with a c6, got 16 mpgs, swap to a 4-speed lost the turbo, same mpg's.
