617 into 190D - IsaacDW - 08-05-2009

I have found a potentially good deal on craigslist for a 1986 190D. From what I can find, the OM602 that is in the 190D is naturally aspirated.

Since I have a "spare" 617 turbo, would an engine swap into the 201 chassis be feasible. The 190D has the five speed manual, which would be my main reason for the swap.

I have absolutely NO idea if anything would fit. Has anyone done or thought about doing this swap before? I just want to explore the possibility. What do you think?

Its possible but you would need to make adapters for the engine mounts and that 5-speed will not attach to the engine.

There is also the legality issue of putting an older engine into a newer body, some states might not let you register the car.

That sounds like it would be far more hassle than it worth. Thanks!

Personally, you are downgrading that car by dropping the 617 in there.

Even if you shoe it in there, your weight distribution is gunna suck. I wouldn't be surprised if the handling becomes sloppy with that anchor up in the front too.

...just thoughts..

You can get an om606 om603 should bolt up in there the 6 cly diesel and work with that transmission! but they are hard to find for a reasonable price

I have contemplated a 616-4speed swap in my spare 190 chassis, it looks pretty easy if you have the transmission from the 617, but yes It will not bolt up to the 5-speed because of a certain starter bung.
