ford ranger om617 compound turbo - carlitosgy6 - 07-02-2014

            hi im trying to do a compound turbo system to prevent turbo lag on the bottom and to reduce the choking of the motor at high rpm, in the picture is an idea of what i want to do,one turbo is a dsm t25,the other one is a t4 from a toyota supra, i will keep posting pictures of the buildup, any ideas welcome

What are the specs on the chargers?
And what are you doing for fuel?

Fuel im going to do the adjustments needed but I'm not looking to add horsepower what I want is to have boost on the bottom end without losing top, i can find a map dor the t25 but for that supra turbo toyota doesn't release them

You will need to bypass exhaust from the manifold around the small turbo and reintroduce it before the large turbo, the bupass will need to be wastegated and the wastegate actuator will need to reference the exhaust manifold and should be fully open when exhaust manifold pressure correlates to the small turbo going out of its compressor efficiency.

that would be a sequential setup. Compounds feed one to the next. The only deciding factors are the maps of the turbos (2:1 is perfect & turbine housing flow/wastegate.

That's what I first thought, but after rereading Hario's post I believe he is just stating that to keep back pressure in check on the small charger a wastegate should be used and plumbed into the hot pipe going into the big charger Smile

Hey thanks for the info, im going to use a big wastegate between the exhaust manifold and the second turbo so the exhaust doesn't get choked but now i have another problem in my mind, i got another turbo, is from a volvo v6 twin turbo but seems too small, i want your opinion, its supposed to be a tdo3 mitsubishi

Im going to try to find the maps for the compressors, remember i need boost as low as possible without sacrificing high end

I was only saying that an aditional wastegated bypass around the small turbo - (in adition to the in-built wastegate) would be needed for a compounding setup, I thought you people from US of A said 'bypass' to mean wastegate??

I was a bit mistaken.
Best bet is to search on google about compound turbos & how they function. www.4btswaps.com has a wealth of information. Ususally, a 2:1 ratio is what is desires. Sometimes, the wastegate on the small turbo can be hogged out to flow enough that an external bypass/wastegate is not needed.
You want to learn how to read the maps of the turbos to figure it out. Hugh Mcguiness (I think) has a great book on turbos, as does Corky Bell. They are old, but the knowledge still pertains.
