Transmission compatibility 1985 190D and 1992 190E - buzzboy - 05-05-2014
My friend drives a 1985 190D 2.2 with a 5 speed. After 360,000 miles his transmission crapped out. No more 3rd gear of any sort. He's found a 5 speed out of a 1992 190E 2.3 and he's wondering if it will be a direct fit.

Has he checked the bushes on the change rods? One of them crumbling and falling out can stop the gear engaging.

+ you need more than just year of the gearbox to give an easy answer, you need the same type of flywheel, singlemass or dualmass, other than that it will fit.
give us gearbox numbers and we can see what we can find out...
like 717.411 single mass
717. 413 dualmass
717.430 single mass and so on.

If I get under the car and put the trans into 3rd bypassing the linkage there is still no 3rd gear.

I'll see what the decimals are later today and I can find out.
His stock transmission should be a 717.410 which is single mass.
The donor should be either a 717.412 or a 717.413 so that's what we need to figure out. If it's the correct flywheel type, he should be good to go?

what i know, i wont swear on this, but that was what i could read out of the EPC...
but i am pretty confident atleast the 717.413 is a dualmass.
if its not the correct flywheel type, you could always get the flywheel and use it anyway, but i dont know if there is any difference in lenght between singlemass/dualmass gearboxes.
(regarding the cardanshafts lenght)
