Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 04-27-2014

My Iveco Turbodail van is kinda slow, it has about 105hp, are there any chance of giving it more power, 130hp would be nice
It has mechanic IP, so no chiptuning.
I don't know much about pump types,it has fuel outputs on back side, not inline. (VE maybe?)

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - Mark_M - 04-27-2014

Assuming this is the Sofim 8140 engine I believe the higher power versions are common rail so their parts aren't much use to you Are you sure there isn't a computer attached to the pump on this engine? It may be a mechanical pump but computer controlled.

You are in the realms of tuning the pump up and getting more boost from the turbo or fitting a bigger one. Sorry I don't know anything about VE pumps and how easy or hard they are to get more out of.

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - MFSuper90 - 04-30-2014

VE pumps are very simple to get more fuel out of them.

If it is indeed a VE, it should look similar to this:
[Image: 1303dp_03%2binjection_system_basics%2bbosch_ve_pump.jpg]
(sorry for the huge picture)
If you take notice where the injection lines come out of the head of the pump, then look directly upward, there is a flathead screw with a 13mm locknut. Give this a couple turns in, but if the engine starts to return to idle slower, you've went too far. But by then it will be bellowing black smoke Big Grin Just go a turn at a time until you are satisfied.

The rectangular box on top of the pump can also be adjusted for fuel before boost, but not all pumps have that box.

If you have anymore questions, don't hesistate to ask!

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-01-2014

There is no ECU. Yeah, it's VE pump for sure. Big Grin

I don't think of placing a bigger turbo, what i really need is faster spool and make the engine more efficient

I'm thinking about removing exhaust parts, for more airflow and turbo sound (yeah!)

Should that do a trick?

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - Petar - 05-01-2014

Get a boost gauge, an EGT gauge and start turning the fuel up.When it starts smoking turn the boost up.But watch your EGTs

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-02-2014

Will do it as soon I could Smile

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - MFSuper90 - 05-03-2014

Adjusting the pump will make the turbo spool sooner. The box on top of the pump controls fuel before boost, and turning that up some can help spool it sooner, just be careful not to turn it up too much, or it will smoke like a freight train Wink

If you google search how to turn up a first generation cummins, it will bring up some nice write ups on how to mess with those pumps. The cummins pump is the exact same, except it is 6 cylinders.

Yeah, I heard that many times, faster spool is really what I need Smile
I'm thinking about Arduino and LCD for boost and EGT values

If you know about that kind of stuff, it seems to be a pretty cheap and accurate way to do it!
I would try it, but I have no knowledge about any of that kind of stuff, and I hate electronics Big Grin

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-07-2014

Electronic is complicated Big Grin, one mechanic guy has same opinion about wastegate mod, so I will do it after Smile

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - MFSuper90 - 05-09-2014

Let us know how it turns out!

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-12-2014

One thing isn't chear do me, does wastegate closes or open when idle and when spools up? Blush

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - MFSuper90 - 05-12-2014

Wastegate is closed at idle. As boost increases, boost is sent to the wastegate diaphragm and that opens the wastegate to allow exhaust gas around the turbine wheel to limit boost Big Grin

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-13-2014

Can I tune wastegate to make faster spool?
I'm afraid of modding pumpHuh , what is with fuel consumption and cold start, everyone says that it will take more fuel..

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - Tito - 05-14-2014

The wastegate is suppose to limit boost. Not delaying spool up time. I don't know about Iveco engines but sometimes on continuous speeds the waste gate is kept open on purpose to limit back pressure and unnecessary heat build-up. But this is delaying spool up time a little bit when you're on the move and want to overtake or something but I doubt it's even noticeable.

Turning up your pump is indeed consuming more fuel. But so is everything when you want to increase power. More power means more fuel. Even if you could get instant boost it's going to consume more fuel because it needs more fuel for the power.

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - MFSuper90 - 05-14-2014

Mod the pump, keep track of ALL adjustments made, and if you like the power and it doesn't consume too much fuel, leave it alone.
But if it consumes too much fuel for your likings, just look at what you wrote down, return it to stock or put it half way in between Smile

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-15-2014

I think i should install sport air filter for turbo sound Big Grin

Right now original filter is clogged and I should fix that first

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - Petar - 05-15-2014

You won't get any more power if you don't add fuel.As i said first add fuel then add more air to burn it.

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 05-17-2014

I will, problem is that I don't drive it at this moment

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - Riverstick - 07-23-2014

I have run these Ivecos ....fantastic engines ...a few of them achieved over 600,000km before needing overhaul. They are strong very tuneable and extremely durable. The VE pump is easy to play with so is the wastegate. An extra 25% output should be easily achievable

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 10-11-2014

Guys, sh** happens, have NOT touched the pump since my last post here, and I have big black smoke issues, so I want to fix this first, and after it's fixed, give it a little tuneup.

So, pump is on 100% factory settings, it smokes when accelerating, when engine starting(why??)

I will change air filter and check for leaks first

You've been rockin' a clogged air filter for six months bro, handle that cheet already. It ain't helping your situation. At least hit it with some compressed air. Report back when complete.

***Also, look for any other changes that began with smoke. Still feel/hear turbo kick in? Performance (or lack of) the same? Fluid leaks anywhere? And you're sure it's black smoke right?

Air starvation probably bit it can also be a bad injector nozzle.
Does it run ok part throttle ?
Check your air filter and also check if the EGR valve is stuck open (if it has one).

RE: Iveco 2.8t more power? - kristijan920 - 10-19-2014

I just found out that "clogged air filter" light on dash is not working so I thought that filter is clean.
It ussualy lights up when filter is dirty and needs replacement, mine didn't.

Changed air filter now, it's a bit better, still a little smoke but it passed MOT with no problems. Smile

BTW: it's EURO3 engine with cat back

Exactly what I need is to climb up using higher gear and sooner boost!
You can see that guy said engine is more lively with this modification, what do you think about it, anyone tried? Big Grin

And what about timing?
