240D Gearing - rdavisinva - 04-27-2014

Does anyone know if the 240D has the same gearing as the 300D?
This weekend pulled a OM616 with 4 speed manual transmission for a conversion into a 450SL.

We got the shifter assembly for the 4 speed, driveshaft, and petal assembly.
We have a 300D parts car, but if the 240D has different gearing, we still have time to pull the diff out before the vehicle gets crushed.
Looks like the 123 diff will fit right into the 107 chassis of the 450SL.

keep the differential of the 450 if i where you, the 3.46 of the 300d or the 3.69 of the 240d is painfully highreved...

both fourspeed is 1:1 on the fourth, no idea about the earlier gears, but cant imagine they are much different.

Thanks.. just wanted to know before the 240D is crushed.

Do you have the diff ratio of the 450SL?

3.07 or 3.06 is what it is supposed to have... Smile depending on year

Any update on this project?

I ask because I am looking at putting a 240D 4-Speed in my 91 420SEL. I think the trans will live as long as I do not beat on it.

RE: 240D Gearing - benzguy - 08-30-2015

The transmission from a 240D will not fit a 420SEL or any V8 engine

RE: 240D Gearing - OM616 - 08-30-2015

lol... It won't?? .......... OH!... you must mean as a direct swap.... Tongue

Custom Flywheel, Bell Housing, yada, yada.....

Not my first day lol... Wink

I was curious as to if the OP liked the set up, or if he blue the trans lol...

@OM616 you might as well go with a 5 speed or even a 6 speed since you're going through all that trouble anyway    Big Grin

The real trouble is finding a good 5 or 6 speed in the US without having to take out a 2nd mortgage. 4 speeds are what are available in the junkyard. Can I get an amen?

Amen Brother!! lol

Plus the rear end gear should be fine with a 4 speed as it has a 4 speed auto now. I have not compared the gear ratios yet, but this is not a race car. I just want something simple and reliable with as little effort as possible and without breaking the bank.

I have a similar job in process now for others, mating a Getrag 420G to a M117 aloy, and M119  blocks.

I can get a 4 speed and all the parts for under 200 bucks. Just need to pick a clutch, make a flywheel, and mod an auto bell housing, everything else is Chicken  XXXX lol

RE: 240D Gearing - benzguy - 08-31-2015

I don't think the transmission from a 240D design to handle 72 HP will handle the power from a V8

RE: 240D Gearing - OM616 - 09-01-2015

I would use an early model iron case trans, but it would be interesting to know what it was actually rated for.

My main reason for posting was to try and find out how it did. I bet it will be find as long as I am not popping the clutch lol... I have known them survive 200HP Diesels very aggressively driven, but they were in lighter cars too...

RE: 240D Gearing - Simpler=Better - 09-01-2015

Don't sweat the clutch/trans, trust your gut. If you don't slam it it will last a while. Case study: me using my 2.5L light clutch/transmission like most people use a fullsize...made it to 238k
