OM602 available locally, worth buying? - JB3 - 04-03-2014

Guy has an engine and tranny combo out of a 92 300D hes wanting to sell. (I am assuming it is an 602, bout not totally sure) He says the motor has 250k on it and has a "harmonic balancee issue". Is one of these engines worth buying for the right price?
I know next to nothing past the OM61X series. Wondering what i should offer if its worth grabbing. He claims it ran well

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - JB3 - 04-03-2014

An update, talked to the guy, and what happened is the woodruff key busted and the harmonic balancer spun. Engine runs fine otherwise he says, and minus a bumper and a few mirrors, he'll sell me the whole car for 500 bucks.

Im gonna try and peek at the crank to see if the keyway is damaged this weekend, but is this a deal worth considering?

Seems reasonable assuming the crank isnt damaged

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - EmJay - 04-03-2014

I agree if the keyway is in good enough shape. I've seen some keyways busted up before on Mazda F engines and my old Civic, I took a dremel and widened/lengthened it a tad and put in a bigger key. Assuming there is enough meat on the crank, even a partially wallowed out keyway is fixable.

Assume the crank will have to come out to fix it. But for 500, it's worth it. It could have ASD. The injectors, PC's and M pump will more than pay for the cost.

I'd like to put one in my truck. So wanna straw man it for me for like 2 years?

Seriously though, you can repin the crank pretty easily unless it went horribly horribly wrong.

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - JB3 - 04-05-2014

So went and checked it out today, fired it up, looked at the keyway for the woodruff key. Is got a little damage to both the crank and harmonic balancer, but i think its fixable. I think im gonna do it, you guys have me convinced its a good idea even from a parts standpoint. Only downside is the car is a pinkish purple color

Kinda excited, totally outside my diesel comfort zone. Seller also had a 70s dodge powerwagon with a 6bt cummins conversion jacked up. Incredible truck

excellent news!

I'd love a OM602 just for the crossflow potential. It might actually spool a turbo unlike the 617...

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - JB3 - 04-09-2014

Its mine!
All paid for, just gotta go grab the sucker. Question, can i tow dolly one of these cars in neutral with the rear tires on the ground?

Im talking 10 miles through city streets and about 40 traffic lights, no highway driving. What do people think?

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - DeliveryValve - 04-09-2014

Nice Grab!

The main issue with the tranny is the lack of lubrication going through the innards without the front pump working. I think if you want a reliable tranny in the future, don't do it. If you don't care and want to risk it, do it.

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - waz - 04-09-2014

I wouldn't want to tow it on a dolly either.

My '93 300D says in the owners manual not to cost with the tranny in neutral even with the engine running.
If I remember right it said if necessary to cost at all, keep it under 30kph for as short as possible to avoid damage.

So my advice would be don't do it unless you're not going to use that trans.

Would you be able to disconnect the drive shaft before towing it?

Edit: No idea if it's the same trans but I do have an OM602.

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - JB3 - 04-09-2014

EDIT- thanks for the info guys, I try and avoid destroying the tranny

It was mostly about what trailer i could get from uhaul. Depending on the guy, they can be prickly on just what exactly they will let me rent with my van. Preferably i want a double axle full trailer, but depending on availability, it might be a dolly.
If i have to go dolly, ill pull the driveshaft. Not sure i want to keep this car past novelty, dont want to damage anything that would hurt a resale

Really not a fan of the 124 body styling, though i havent ever driven one, so i may eat these words

If you kill the slush box it's easily fixed with a 5speed manual Big Grin

Welcome to the dark side... (w124 Wink )

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - JB3 - 04-10-2014

here it is in all its glory!

Ill have to start a thread on trying to get this thing running.

Turned out to be 10 bucks more to flatbed it than rent a uhaul, made that decision easy, so no torched tranny

inside is almost mint, I better get my hands on some mirrors though before that condition changes

Again, nice grab!

That's one of my favorite w124 colors when the paint is perfect.

is it a turbo? cant see what stands after that 2.5 at the trunklid...

either way, as long as you dont have a warped head, these engines are solid, and once you plane it, it will stay even unless you overheat it like hell...
(check for oilleaks at second/third cylinder, below exhaust manifold, it runs for a long time with a slightly warped head to Tongue )

imo, the w124 offers a much softer/comfortable ride with better handling than the w123 (if it wasnt for charm, and mostly tax, i would have built on w124s/w140 instead)

Yeah its a turbo!
With the pulley falling off, i have no idea if it overheated or not, crossing my fingers.

Looking forward to playing with it, trying to complete a major job for work, eating all my time!
Been so busy i forgot i bought this car for a few days. Big Grin

RE: OM602 available locally, worth buying? - swampmonkey - 04-16-2014

hehe, that could be fun Smile i left the stock turbo there while upgrading the pump in my w123, althou im using it more as a daily/towtruck, and if i would go bigger with the turbo id probably brake the transmission Smile

hope it will work out great for you, will be fun to hear what a om616/om617guy says about the om602 Smile
