OM603 Idle control for swap - dude99 - 03-03-2014

So I'm toying with the idea of swapping a 603 into my 1990 300te as I'm less that thrilled with the m103. I have a couple questions regarding this idea however:

1) My biggest curiosity is the electronic idle control. How does it work and what parts would i need from the donor to make it work in a new car
2) are the m103 and om603 the same length?
3) do they use the same engine mounts?
4) would the diesel bolt up to and so work with my gasser transmission
5) will my current driveshaft work?

I'm just weighing this out as an option right now so I'd also love to hear from anyone thats done this swap.

1- you would need the OE engine electronics to make it idle, however you can easy make a idle controller to work the ELR. Or live with a 550RPM idle. Dieselmeken may be able to advise if there is a corse idle adjustment to be made on the pump.
2-Pretty much. A 603 3.5 crankshaft will fit into the M103/M104 to make a stroker engine.
3-Mounts yes (per EPC) and you would need engine support brackets from a 1987 300D
4-Yes, you would need a different flex plate/flywheel. Torque converter has a different part number for the diesel. Probably a different stall speed
5-yes, the cross member for the 603 and 103 in a w124 wagon are the same part number. That tells us that the transmission is in the same position.

If it was me though.... i would turbo the M103. That's a tough motor. Visit Turbo-bandit to see what they have done with the M103/M104.

Awesome, thanks for all the answers, exactly what I needed to know.

As for a turbo m103, it would be fun, I'm just weighing out various options. I'm not sure if I want to stick with gas, I like the simplicity and economy of the diesels. On the other hand I am also thinking of keeping the m103 and swapping in a 5 speed, which would later made further efficient by changing the engine to run megasquirt….. anyways…

In the meantime could you tell me more about making an idle controller?

FYI, my 603 idles good enough with the ELR unplugged that I wouldn't think twice about doing without. YMMV, not all pumps are adjusted the same, but idle can be adjusted without ELR.

You can just as easily leave the electrical bits on the shelf. Adjusting the idle manually would allow for super-simple swap, no need to over complicate things. Get a hold of the service manual and it ceases to be a curiosity.
