OMG! trouble torquing transmission to engine - Syncro_G - 07-18-2009

I started bolting my rebuild back together and had a disaster torquing the bolts holding the transmission to engine.

My 300D workshop CD is oddly missing any specs for bolting transmission to engine. So instead, I was going off of my G-wagen manual for bolting the automatic to engine.

There, it says to torque transmission-to-engine bolts to 55 Nm.
so that should be 71 ft-lbs, right?

But I've torqued 3 bolts and 2 out of three failed at around 55 ft-lbs.
The first one I torqued up was at top of transmission (direct into engine block). It felt fine.
Second one (the other top bolt) failed.
So not sure if that was an anomaly, I tried the bolt that's backed by a nut on left side of engine (figured the failure of that one would not hurt anything). It too failed.

So, given that,
What's the proper torque for those bolts?
And any suggestions on what to do with the threads in the engine block that I've screwed up?

-thanks! S_G

Bad news, 55 newton meter = 40 pound foot

Drill and tap for the next size up is what I'd do.

ugh.
I was looking at a poorly laid out conversion chart and matched up the wrong columns.
... ft-lbs Nm ft-lbs Nm ...
... 41 55.6 72 97.6 ....

... thanks. I'm off to get a tap and some new bolts.

You could helicoil it with as well after drilling the holes, then use new same size bolts.

I like that idea - don't have to widen the holes in the bell housing.
I'm in the middle of doing a dry-fit with the stripped threads. I have many new brackets (and engine mount arms) to fabricate and will be pulling the engine back out when those are done.

Thanks! I've been working on the swap for about 3 months now. I have two tiny kids so my time for projects is really limited but it's coming along bit by bit.
