It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-04-2014

What about everyone else?
I got a high of -1 on Tuesday, low of -14F Monday night. Without windchill, check that antifreeze!

RE: It's cold outside - Greazzer - 01-04-2014

It is cold by South Carolina standards, 23F last night. I was out picking up my son from an ICE SKATING Party in South Carolina, and it was 27F driving home at 10PM. Yikes !

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-04-2014

I was just chucking in a bit more anti-freeze to the overflow tank and some old gasoline into the fuel tank. This is predicted to be a quick cold snap, coldest in over 40yrs. Predicted here to be below 0f for 36-48hrs. Something like -15f

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-04-2014

Last night our power decided to go out, so now our furnaces don't work. This is AWESOME!
Thanks power company.

And I bet over there in Indiana the wind chill will really get ya, the wind always blows over there in the flatlands.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-04-2014

We're not flat like Illinois. I'm out in the forest and halfway down in a little valley/holler, so that helps cut the wind. My body does well to about 15-20f but that wind will fuck you up boy. Prolly will leave the benz plugged in over this 2 day cold period. I'm too worried about how much that antifreeze can deal with.
May need to starve out my dogs a bit on account of it will be too dangerous for them to go outside for a piss/shit.

On the plus side I've heard that really cold winter spells help kill of bug eggs that are in the soil waiting to hatch in the spring.

RE: It's cold outside - Austincarnut - 01-04-2014

here, its just right...

RE: It's cold outside - tjts1 - 01-04-2014

Its been kind of cold the last couple of days.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-04-2014

Cold is real rough on my car. I've got that 15-40w dino oil in there, nice and thick. And all the snow, ice, slush that soaks into the car puts gremlins into my electrical circuits.
Signals go out, radio goes out, fog lights go out, and the battery leaks power across shorts that are god knows where.

RE: It's cold outside - sassparilla_kid - 01-04-2014

Yep, is been pretty cold here too, I've been having to wear a t-shirt under my work shirts to help with the extra chill

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-04-2014

Ha. It's going to be getting so cold here I worry about trees getting brittle. They usually sway with the wind but, if they get too cold they're liable to start snapping.

you're a turd ... lol. Man, I miss S.C. weather right about now.

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-04-2014

Its cold.

And Lars I know what your talking about. Get a big frozen branch, inch of ice, breeze....falling on you car. Always looking up when I park.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-05-2014

I bet my neighbor's house trailer will probably get knocked. They seem to be in more dense trees than any of us. And the trees are growing all fucking crooked and leaning all over.

RE: It's cold outside - CRD4x4 - 01-05-2014

My road is lined by Osage Orange trees with fruit that weighs a couple pounds each.
The ones that haven't fallen onto the road and/or traffic are frozen solid ticking timebombs!
To make matters worse, the deer love to congregate in the road eating the squished fruit from the tarmac.Angry

Ps Its cold/snowy here too but I like it.

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-05-2014

I got a bright idea today.... I can get a battery in or out in a minute on these rides. I'm gonna try and store the battery indoors tonight warm and toasty. I shouldn't have to at less than a year old 850cca but gee whiz its cold out.

Fun fact, Osage orange (hedge apples as we call them) repell spiders. Lots of people out them in their basements.
It's so cold and snowy they cancelled college class tomorrow. SCORE!!

That's good to know, I always just thought there were nature's way of killing bikers.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-06-2014

We call em monkey brains too. I seen groundhogs chew on them nasty bastards all day.

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-06-2014

It's like -10 here, with a wind chill of -30. Needless to say my car wouldn't start for the first time. Had the block heater plugged in, but not for sure if it works yet.
The fresh 15w-40 probably was the worst problem of starting it. It was firing, but rolling too slow to be able to start.

RE: It's cold outside - Greazzer - 01-06-2014

Maybe single digits tonight in Columbia, South Carolina. What the hell ??????????????

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-06-2014

Neither of mine would run today -15,deg F. -999 wind chill. Block heater on. I'm thinking the fuel was almost gelled. 5w40 in both

My 75
It would start and run a few seconds and stop

My 85 no start and slow turning I think the block heater is dead.

Learn a lot about your car in the cold :-)

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-06-2014

I've had mine down to zero before and it started, must be somethin magical about negative numbers! Haha

RE: It's cold outside - Simpler=Better - 01-07-2014

I've got corrugated board over the radiator in the DD...hit a whopping 188°F on the way to work today Tongue

RE: It's cold outside - CRD4x4 - 01-07-2014

Both mine and my wife's DD's are stranded today! Luckily its in our driveway.
'06.5 Jetta TDI blew a brake line and '05 Liberty CRD stalls under acceleration.

I blame both on the cold (0*F via VW readout).

It's gonna be a numb one today!!!

RE: It's cold outside - waz - 01-07-2014

It was 3f when I left for work at 7am. Now just after 11am it's up to a whopping 6f.

The '93 300D has been fine. Well, a visor clip shattered when I forgot about the cold plastic thing and tried to block the sun glare.

The 2004 Avalanche got a new battery 1/1. On 1/4 I was laying in the snow in the driveway changing the starter. Always fun having ice, salt, and slush dropping on you with the wind is blowing up you coat.

RE: It's cold outside - martureo - 01-07-2014

Woke up to 0°F on both my DD 84 300D and my wife's 95 E300. I forgot to plug my block heater in last night and I left my trickle charger at my in-laws... grrrr.

One glow cycle on mine and the engine wasn't turning over quickly. Crap. I know it's not the oil (LubroMoly 5w40), I know the starter is pretty young, compression is okay. It's started up fine the last few cold mornings at ~17°F. But I guess <0° all night isn't sitting well with my battery.

So no jumper cables (I burnt through the ones I had last week) and no trickle charger. I jumped in the E300 (with 5 good gps) and after snarling at me it warmed up and I was on my way.

It was 4° when I got to work at 9ish. 11° when I went out for lunch.

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-07-2014

I don't think my block hearers working, cause I think my car would have started.
I'll have to look into that

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-07-2014

Fired my 617 in negative temps after a 3hr block heat and battery tender on all night. Not too hard to start. But I can sure feel the fuel supply circuit having a rough time pump that molasses through the filters. Try and go up a long hill and the motor starts to run out of fuel Wink

RE: It's cold outside - sassparilla_kid - 01-07-2014

You need a fuel pre-heater before the filters, like the hose-in-hose type, or maybe an aluminum block the fuel passes through with a glow plug in it

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-07-2014

Need the weather to improve Wink
I have a tank with about 8 gal pump diesel and about 3/4 gal gasoline. Plus whatever residual crap is in the system. Who knows where the main issue is. Tank screen, filters, water in fuel. Idk, just bring us up part 32f and surely will be running better.

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-07-2014

Do you guys run additive to help with gelling?
We run stanadyne additive in all of our fuel, we have not seen as many injection pump problems after running the additive

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-07-2014

I use powerservice at every fill up. Grey in summer white in winter. I'm sure some think that stuff is snake oil and does nothing but I figure it probably doesn't hurt. I'm not the type to get into heated discussions because I don't really know enough about it. I'd love to do a test in a mason jar or something monitoring various temps and concentration of additives and the effect on viscosity but I'm lazy.

All that said. Car wouldn't start today :-). That could be due to bad timing, pissing injectors, low compression, all of the above.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-07-2014

Or due due to chicago. She could see the 3ft snow drifts and feel the -40F windchill and just decided to hibernate a few more days Wink

Lol. I should let the poor girl rest! I've got classes starting again this week. I took my wife's gasser today. Tomorrow she needs her car so i am ready to fight with that jack frost guy and take the old girl out of the doldrums. Block heater is on, I got the batter fully charged and relaxing indoors, Got more fuel additive than SHOULD be needed in the tank, bought a portable jump start unit for some extra amps, and it's supposed to get as high as -4 by 6am. <---bullsh%$ stupid A$$ F&cking cold. Yeah so I should maybe be ok......

Side note.
Diesel 911 and the white diesel bottle are sold out at walmart, meijer, two auto stores, anything nearby. I called 5 different parts stores, all their portable battery jumpers are sold out. I went to Meijer (if you don't know its like walmart) and they had one left. Everyone is buying this crap. Dropped my battery off at autozone for a charge, they had probably 10 batteries on the counter waiting for a charge.

i don't normally hashtag but when i do.
#thissucks #northernerproblems

lars is yours running?

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-07-2014

I thought about putting a blow dryer in front of my charger? I know it sucks way more air then a hairdryer can handle, but I am just curious how much of a difference it could make.

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-07-2014

Lol now we're getting wild. Shoot I'm up for just about anything.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-08-2014

I never found a hair dryer to help at all. I think you need a block heater and a charged battery when it gets really cold. Maybe a torpedo heater pointed at the the whole front of the car could help. I don't think that hair dryer is going to do much.
If you don't have a working block heater they sell aftermarket ones that magnetically attach to the oil pan. You could use that and then take it off and set it up on the shelf when you don't need it.

RE: It's cold outside - Simpler=Better - 01-08-2014

Fi tried using the cummins grid heater, it didn't work out IIRC.

Once in a pinch I heated the oilpan with a propane torch to get her going(half hour or so?). Kept moving the torch around so I wouldn't boil the oil in one spot or warp the pan. Was 2pm, not a cloud in the sky, and -3°F Big Grin

greeley, can you get an extension cord out there? A trickle charger (hit up small repair shops they usually have 50 used ones) and one or two 100W bulbs, along with a blocked grill and a blanket might work for you.

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-08-2014

No start. I guess hibernation not over. 20s tomorrow.

Turned over really good just would fire. Stupid fuel.

*wouldn't*

RE: It's cold outside - carlitosgy6 - 01-08-2014

when i was going out from Chicago it was 6 below, you know all the trouble i was having to start at 15 imagine at below numbers,i was in the hospital with a relative of my wife and taking off at 6 am,no way the truck was going to fire at below numbers so i got into the hospital at 8 pm,engine warm, waited until 12 am got into the freezing parking lot started the engine easily and let it run all night,im sorry all night and next day until 9 pm we stop at Knoxville,i think one of the best and most reliable engine is an om617 turbo,i think im going to have this truck for life

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-08-2014

I think my issue is fuel in the lines. I added plenty of additive after parked. Tank is probably liquid and lines gelled. My plan latter is to use a hand vacumm pump to suck treated fuel into the lines.

RE: It's cold outside - larsalan - 01-08-2014

If you were going to run a hair dryer anywhere I would put it on the spin on fuel filter. Help liquefy that bit. If the motor fires I bet it can start to pull a little jelly fuel and that will clear up once it starts to pump.
Make sure the battery is tip top or you have zero chance.

RE: It's cold outside - _siim_ - 01-08-2014

Hahaaaa what a nice topic, its always so funni to read warm climate peoples discuss about cold and snow Big Grin

We have to use winter tires 4 months per year, its a law and I have sudded tires on my winter-merc,seems little bit pointless....

its strange winter this year, usually we get the snow around mid december, but right now its only raining and raining,no snow,no ice,no fun.... +4C´(39.2F) outside......

That sucks, best roads are usually between -10C´(10F) -20C´(-4F) because then this fking salt doesn't work what they put on the roads.

RE: It's cold outside - Simpler=Better - 01-08-2014

A propane torch can be used on anything as long as you don't dwell too long. I've used it to thaw plastic washer fluid resavoirs that were filled with water. Just enough heat to conduct to the inside, not enough to burn the outside.....

RE: It's cold outside - sassparilla_kid - 01-09-2014

At least you guys don't have to deal with crappy air, the air here is so bad outside (the weather people said "severely unhealthy") the visibility is about half or three quarters of a mile and if you go too fast on the freeway it'll take paint off the car Tongue

RE: It's cold outside - MFSuper90 - 01-09-2014

In the mid ohio valley, we have some for the worst air in the United States. We have a crap ton of factories down here on the river

RE: It's cold outside - swampmonkey - 01-10-2014

jelly diesel! Wink

my 240d w115 starts without blockheater in 5degrees fahrenheit Wink us swedes are used to that kind of colds Tongue and perhaps the diesel are better to.
althou at 5degress fahrenheit it is barely, 1minute glowing, WOT and a 20 seconds starter run, althou the engine is quite torn, very torn acctualy.

the newer om602/603s is no problem even at -5degrees fahrenheit Tongue you just cycle the glowplugs two or three times for a imediate start.

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-10-2014

Now I suck. Itd in the 30s and I can't get either of these douchebag cars to start. Don't even sound like they are thinking about firing. F%&k.

pour a full pot of boiling water over the ip and the engine,it will start right away

RE: It's cold outside - lgreeley83 - 01-12-2014

I also let the basics fall to the wayside. Im thinking maybe glo plugs are shot. Maybe I had 3 or four good one and now I burned one more out or something. My fuel is not gelled, no air in system. I'm going to do some glow plug diag this week. I've got some extras for my 85 and I order a loop to pencil conversion kit for the 75.
