om606 oversized pistons. - whipplem104 - 12-11-2013

I was curious does anyone know of oversized pistons for the om606. And has anyone put in a om603 350sd crank in one for larger displacements. I have a motor at my shop right now that has a damaged cylinder wall from broken rings and instead of putting a sleeve in and stock pistons I was curious about building it. I also have a bad 350 motor with bent rods.

That is a good question, I was looking info about oversize pistons fot OM606.962 and no results, have the Mahle pistons catalog and neither...
I bought a OM606.962, but it has a lot of mileage, worn bores, bad luck, need buy another engine, this leave for spares parts, head, crank, rods, pistons, sump..... started it with the mechanical pump days ago, a small plastic of the fuel tubes goes into a intake duct and a valve was bent, take off the cylinder head and saw the worn bores.
First I look for oversize pistons, but it is cheaper buy another used engine.Here are expensive as general rule, about 1200-1500 euro, but there are others at 600-900 euro.

About the 350SD crank new pistons are needed, difference in stroke divided in 2, and rest to stock compression height of the piston:

350SD 92,4mm stroke
300D 84mm stroke

92,4-84= 8,4 8,4:2= 4,2

To fit the 350SD in a 603-606 block special custom pistons must be with 4,2mm less compression height than stock 603-606 pistons, or a rod shorter in 4,2mm center to center.

But think the 603-606 engine it is OK with 84mm stroke, more high revs, and we love that high revving, if big turbo is used it spoll at 3500rpm (for example), and you have more usable rpmĀ“s with shorter stroke.

Hope you understand my "Spanglish"...sorry.

Thanks for the reply. I know the rods and pistons would need replaced. I was just curious if anyone had done it. I do not think that peak rpm would be affected due to the longer stroke though. It is not like you are going to rev that high.
Yeah I looked at getting a sleeve and a piston and machine work for the customer and it is just cheaper to buy a used engine. I was just thinking about building one of these in the future and if I was going to buy performance parts anyways why not use what I have laying around.

hy fine peolpe, maybe u can fit the 350 sleves in the 300, if is that the case u may end up with same crank shaft same rods, and fit the pistons in the sleves. it may work, the other trick is a thik head gasket , well 6 mm thik , or maybe 4 suits.
well have fun and keep us posted.
regards

That is a good idea. If the sleeves fit but the problem would be the combustion chamber and valve design. Probably just easier to have custom pistons made for the om606.

RE: om606 oversized pistons. - barrote - 12-11-2013

thik head gasket , they can acomodate the pistons . the only thing that may hit the piston is the pre cup , dig a deeper hole on the piston Smile.
well i dont think the pistons on the 350 are higher than he ones for the 300, the stroke got to do with the crank shaft. i wonder if the sleves are not the same size, if i know germans well , probably they increased engine volume by crank shaft size. anyone know the cylinder diameter in the 300 version?

RE: om606 oversized pistons. - hansendk - 12-11-2013

here is the numbers for oversize pistons

KS = 87.50 mm 94 820 710
liner = 89 193 190

Mahle =87.50 mm 001 02 01
liner 001 WV 13

0.50 mm is the only oversize made for the engine the numbers is for 605-606. 960-962-964
i dont think there are any problem getting the pistons in europe there is also a possible that Nural make pistons but i dont have that catalog right here.

RE: om606 oversized pistons. - Gasoil - 12-12-2013

Thanks Hansendk, I check again the catalog , is from KolbenSchmidt, not Mahle as said before, and yes, it appears oversize pistons for the N/A and Turbo 605-606, 87,5mm , for turbo 44,87mm compression height, 28mm pin.

For the 603 there are 87,7mm overbore...curious.

custom connecting rods that are shortened to accommodate the taller pistons
