What turbo should I choose for my OM603? (tuning) - Flyingwheels - 09-14-2013

Hi, I have a 3l om603 to be placed into a BMW E28, I bought the car and engine. After I got the engine mounted in the car and it is running an test drived I have a plan to get a pump whit 7,5 mm elements, an I am hoping to get 300+ hp.
So my question is what turbo chold I have for this engine?

Depends on application mate, if this is just a weekend toy then a fixed geometry turbo would be adequate, something like a HX30 or HX35 I guess, or you could use a chinese garrett copy if funds are lacking, I've got a friend whos running a GT28 copy on his volvo t5 and has done for the past 12 months or so and hasn't had a problem with it, it might be something I look into at the time,

VNT's are a possibility if its a daily driver or even a weekend toy,
personally if it was me then compound turboing would be my choice...

This wil be a weekend/track car, and I want a turbo whitout wastegate, and weld a exhaust manifoyl whit a extern wastegate.

What do you mean whit VTN's? And compound turboing?
I am from Norway, I tried to translate it.

VNT turbo's have variable nozzles that control the flow on the exhaust turbine. So on low rpm they can get full boost. And when the rpm goes up the angle of the scoops change to allow more flow.

So you get the advantages of a small turbo, and a slightly bigger turbo

Sounds great but they need electrical mapping.

Btw, try searching VNT turbo instead of VTN Angel

i would say the VNT would be the way to go, like a cheap HE351VE. compounds are tricky and expensive. and from the way i understand things, compounds work best for 5-600+ hp. i could be wrong, have been before. but an HE351VE can be controlled by spring and lever to open with the throttle. i have seen it work before on the ford forums. if you can figure some kind of electrical mapping out with them that would proly be best. but its not a must. and besides all that the HE351VE comes off of a newer 6.7 cummins, so its swapped out for bigger turbos and resold on ebay pretty cheap with low miles all the time. and because of that, there have been a lot of people that have used that turbo on many different applications. so there is a lot of info out there on them. when i have enough fuel to worry about a turbo upgrade, i think an HE351VE will be what i am after.

The black smoke racing engine use holset hk55?
And I am looking for the same type of using for the car, why
do they have so big turbo, and I get the advise of using the hk35. I am asking woldnt it work whit a hk55
on my om603 whit 7,5mm elements? Smile

dont they run a supercharger for low end boost? hk55 would be a good turbo for a compound setup but you need something for low end boost, hence why they use the supercharger for low end.

An hx55 is too big for a 5.9l cummins as a single, unless your strickly pulling or drag racing. Let alone a 3.0l Benz.

Benz diesel rev higher (6000rpm is possible i thought?). So there's a huge flow of exhaust gas. On a cummins the rev's are lower and the flow maybe more, but on lower rev's
