New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 06-30-2013

Well I stumbled (almost literally) across a good deal on some type of little amphibious buggy. Its pretty much the goofiest thing I have ever seen, but I like it and it was only $200.

Pics soon to come, it has a 440 Kawasaki snowmobile engine on it, and I just got it fired up tonight.
I know very little about two stroke besides Detroits. It doesn't idle quite right, or run quite right period, smokes like a train.
So should I replace the basics? sparkplugs, gaskets etc?

Make sure the two stroke mix is correct to much oil can cause smoke and kill power

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - Simpler=Better - 07-01-2013

Older 2 strokes ran dirtier mixed than the new "clean" 2 strokes-x2 on the right ratio.
From racing dirtbikes, my brother swears by the million dollar synthetic 2 stroke oil.

Does it take premix or mix the oil itself?

You WILL foul plugs, it's just a matter of time. Nature of the beast, you can usually pull them, clean em;, and reuse.

Are the carbs clean? Are the flappers operating properly?

I have a 4 stroke kawi 440, it's a fun little ride.

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 07-01-2013

Single carb unit, and I am running whatever ratio we run in our chainsaws currently.
Carb seems decently clean, and the plunger type deal seems to be working fine. One odd thing I noticed is that it seems to spray gas back out the carbureator while it is running?
And it takes premix.
Pics tonight I promise! You guys will be like "wtf is that thing"

^ Wot he said. Ratio is 40-1. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_fuel_oil_ratio_for_a_79_kawasaki_440_jet_ski

Well there is two terrible pictures. That's without the fiberglass shell on it. Better pictures to come.

It is a little frustrating to work on, the guy before me was the biggest Jerry rigger I have ever seen. He had the steering wheel on with jam nuts and a bolt? No tapered shaft or splines.. I'm not sure how he actually steered it. So I have been just trying to fix what he fudged up
I put new plugs in it, might have helped a little. I think I am running to much oil, smokes like a train. My friends keep telling me that I won't have to worry about Mosquitos on it haha

looks like fun!

Wow those pictures look even worse on the computer! I'll have to slap the body on it sometime soon and take some pics.
Does anyone has any ideas why is mists fuel back out the carb when it runs?

Your flapper isn't keeping the air in the cylinder, check it out.

Is there an expansion pipe on before the muffler? That will hurt your performance too.

If you're worried about a fire with the carb, just run some pipe from the carb and relocate the air filter.

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 07-02-2013

By flapper do you mean the reed?

Yarp. Either worn out or gunked up. Either that or you're seeing excessive exhaust pressure, but for a 440 that muffler looks plenty big enough

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 07-02-2013

Well this engine has no reeds, its wide open in the intake manifold. kinda like a detroit i suppose? when you roll it, you can see when it opens the port, and you can see the top of the rods.
I have been cleaning the carburetor today. Plus a little teardown to see how things work.
I wonder where i could get an expansion pipe for it?
And im kinda wondering if that muffler isnt half plugged up. there is a slip joint in the pipe with no clamp, and it like to blow fumes and shit out of there. Backpressure?

I'm only guessing from halfassed experience though.

the blokes over at customfighters.com will know it all though

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 07-02-2013

I didn't even know what a fighter was haha
Searched around over there, just abunch of motorcycle stuff simpler?
I think I can rig up the stock snowmobile disc brakes to this thing somehow. I need to get some pics with the body on for ya'll.
Be on my todo list tomorrow.

Those guys are badass, and know what they're talking about. They also know how to make something from nothin', including expansion chambers for 2 strokes.

I'm on there occasionally, I have a halfassed fightered ninja. Something about a bare bones bike gets me all wiley

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - raysorenson - 07-05-2013

Leaking crank seal causing the motor to burn gearbox oil. Just a guess. Likely not too much 2t oil. You should be able to tell by the smell of the smoke.

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 07-05-2013

Well I am now waiting for a the gasket to mount the carb on the manifold. It was torn, causing it to run lean (I figure). I pulled the carb apart and cleaned it all up. We will see what happens now.
Ray, I read about that some places. I know that the smokes stinks like hell, saturates your clothes like unburnt diesel

RE: New toy! Need 2-stroke help - MFSuper90 - 07-06-2013

Well i ran a compression test today, and it was a whopping 25psi in each cylinder.
Needless to say, its time for teardown. Probably just put rings in it, unless bearings or something is needed
