Welding Om617 Exhaust manifold. - stomis - 06-02-2013

Was wondering if the om617 exhaust manifold was cast iron or cast steel. Im figuring its cast iron. I used ni-rod when I welded my EGR shut just to be safe and am considering welding a port straight to the manifold for my external wastegate but would prefer to MIG it if possible as Im not really an avid stick welder.

I mig welded mine without any problems

I have mig welded cast with pretty good success also

preheat, clean the surface, and let it cool over a few hours. I've only done mild cast welding though, haven't hacked up my exhaust yet

pre heating definitely helped with the exhaust manifold penetration, but in only have 120v mig welder.

Preheat & use stainless wire, then wrap it in a welding blanket.

If its cast iron Ill just do it the right way and preheat and bone up on my stick welding skills and break out the ni-rod.

Thanks guys.
