Just advance timing all the way like I did!! Only problem I've had is that it runs like shit until warm, other than that it's great

The only problem with that is I don't live in Cali... Haha
It get below zero here sometimes and I don't think it'll start if I advance it all the way. I'm gonna go little by little and see what happens when I get time

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 12-08-2013

Little update.
I advanced the pump probably between 1/16 and 1/8" (judging by the notch)
Also I took the spring out of a pen and added it to the over flow valve to hold a little more pressure.

I am impressed with the results, car seems much more peppy on top end, I think the turbo spools a little sooner, and egts are a little higher, which doesn't hurt anything at all for me. I only drove it once tonight, so I'll have more info on how it works out a little later

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 12-10-2013

Weird thing happened today while driving it, I noticed it was holding about 2-3psi of boost more at cruising speeds (70mph). This was on the flat, so no different load.
After about 25mi it dropped back down to normal or a little below. Think it's just fluctuation in the gauge? Or is it possible the fuel return spring I put in the return got weak after that amount of time? I mean it is just a pen spring.

Just curious :p
What do y'all think?

depends if it was a bic pen or not Im guessing.

Haha I think it was a bic!

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - kmaser - 12-11-2013

What did you do for oil supply to the turbo? Did you keep the restrict or that is part of the stock line?

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - willbhere4u - 12-12-2013

The pen spring may have failed after a short while because of the heat

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 12-12-2013

(12-11-2013, 11:12 PM)kmaser What did you do for oil supply to the turbo? Did you keep the restrict or that is part of the stock line?
I made my own line, it has no restriction in it. Seems to work just fine, so excessive smoke line it's bypassing The seals, and the stock drain bolted right up

(12-12-2013, 10:59 AM)willbhere4u The pen spring may have failed after a short while because of the heat
I figured it wouldn't do much, but i just did it for shits and giggle to see if it would help

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 12-20-2013

Well finally got some time to work on it again, the idle needed some work, so while I was in the pump I took the time to do another turn on the torque capsule and max out my rack limiter adjustment. I also yanked all that 3-2 switch crap out of there also.

Results are more fuel at top end, it didn't blow my socks off or anything, but by watching the egr gauge rise I could tell it had more. And it seemed a little faster. I think now I'm going to get a MBC and turn the boost up a couple psi

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 06-08-2014

Wow, its been a long time since ive posted anything up on my own build.
Last night my sisters boyfriend back into my car and put a dent in the passenger door and rear fender. Pretty discouraging considering my whole body on my car was completely straight, just needed a little rust fixed.

On a different note, I got my windows tinted and a 3.5" polished stainless tip put on my exhaust.
Pics to come of all of the above.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - led-panzer - 06-08-2014

Let's see that exhaust tip!

That sucks about the damage, similar thing happened to me, my Fiancés brother backed into my green one, than waited 2 hours to tell me because he was "afraid" lol

Going to take it somewhere or do the bodywork yourself?

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 06-08-2014

Here's some of the tip
[Image: D0B60A4D-DDA4-42E1-9BC4-13BEF6FD7156_zpsm9xbugof.jpg]
[Image: 92D1A88C-5A78-4016-B8B7-13AE75CEE7C1_zpsuw0apwqf.jpg]

Here's a cool shot while I was spraying Corn the other morning
[Image: 064031A0-AC85-4648-90BB-6A22CDEE752E_zpsoe3horsv.jpg]

And here's the damage, hard to see.
[Image: F09B3328-DAD9-46F3-A199-CF6490E1B011_zpstq89cms5.jpg]

And I'm going to get an estimate tomorrow.
Give me an engine and I'll tear it down and rebuild it however you like. Give me body work to do an it'll look like scrap metal Big Grin

Stock down pipe to 3" pipe to 3.5" tip.
Nothin special, I kept the stock down pipe to simplify installation

Goddamnit I was wondering where that post went!! Sorry bout that lol

Also, too bad about being backed into, but fixed up and fresh paint will make that thing bitchin'!

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 10-20-2014

Well, picked up a low mile 603 today, downfall is the auto and a #14 head, but I am gonna try it and hope it lasts Smile
Hopefully I can swap it during my winter break of college. I think it will be a fun and interesting swap

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - mbz123 - 10-22-2014

How many miles and how much cheddar did you exchange for it, if you don't mind? Do any testing on it prior or just rolling the dice?

MBZ123

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 10-22-2014

12x,xxx miles on it, came with a 722.3. He gave me service records of the engine back to 88. (Came out of a 87)
I paid $800 for the whole shebang. Does that sound reasonable?

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - led-panzer - 01-27-2015

So... does this thing have a 603 under the hood yet?

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 01-27-2015

(01-27-2015, 09:52 PM)led-panzer So... does this thing have a 603 under the hood yet?

I sure wish it did! Between college and trying to keep stuff going on the farm back home, I haven't had any free time to mess with it. 6 speeds have really caught my eye here lately, as have Dieselmeken's 7.5mm elements.

But as for now, I still daily driving the old girl. I make little improvements here and there all the time, but never document them or post anything...

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 03-23-2015

Well i took the old girl on a road trip this week, went on a spring break skiing trip. Drove about 1200 miles in just a couple days, 3400rpm for 4 hours straight on the interstate to Michigian. Averaged between 21-24mpg, which isn't to hateful for the rpm I was running.

The only thing i can really update is that i pulled all the trim that was falling off and restuck it with some 3M double sided tape.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - mike-81-240d - 04-20-2015

Did your HX30 bolt up to your stock downpipe? Do you have a pic?

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 04-20-2015

No it did not mike sorry for the huge pic.
But I took a piece of pipe, and welded it to the back flange of the turbo and to the stock downpipe brace. Then I just used the stock downpipe. Stock drain works good though! If I had it to do over again, I would put a restrictor in the inlet, becauSe mine leaks out of the drain, and I'm pretty sure it just pushes too much oil through the charger.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - raysorenson - 04-20-2015

You mean the turbo oil drain is leaking? That's a common problem on stock turbo cars.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 04-20-2015

(04-20-2015, 11:11 AM)raysorenson You mean the turbo oil drain is leaking? That's a common problem on stock turbo cars.

Yes, I put a new gasket in and everything. But as much oil pressure as these engines push a oil restrictor definitely wouldn't hurt, the stock turbos have a restrictor

By the way, summer wheels and all cleaned up for once  Cool

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - turbojeep - 04-20-2015

How's that HX30 do? Been happy with the change?

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - raysorenson - 04-20-2015

It's the o-rings and rubber grommet seal that leak, unless you've got something different. They're so difficult to replace that the lower sheet metal drain tube usually gets destroyed trying to replace the rubber bits.

It's the lower guy in the pic that's the typical culprit

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 04-21-2015

(04-20-2015, 05:03 PM)turbojeep How's that HX30 do? Been happy with the change?

I love it. Did it give me 300hp? No.
Does it sound badass? You bet.
If I had a big pump, I bet it would spool like crazy and put down some solid numbers on the rollers. I don't think I would run one on a non-modified stock pump though.
It was a fun install if your into fabrication and stuff, but I like it. I originally wanted a he221, but they have different flanges, so the hx30 simplified installation.
I believe if I was going to get a big pump and could reselect turbos, I'd go with a super hx30 from alcaid

And towards ray, I'll have to run the car up on the lift and check that out.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 11-22-2015

Well guys, I'm still plugging along with it. Really itching to get my 603 put in, but kinda scared of the #14 head as well.

Nothing too cool has happened. Just little pissy things that aggravate me to fix. Latest is that I had a fuel leak and a coolant leak and a brake fluid leak. One is the mono valve, the other was a line and last is the master cylinder.

While I was fixing the fuel line, I figured I'd yank the strainer out and see how it was. And WOW. 95% blocked off, it's a wonder it ran! So I pulled the tank and cleaned it as well.

[Image: 12951046-ACCF-41F0-A817-1C05527F6892_zpsjihvdpam.jpg]

The first picture I had actually cleaned it slightly already. It was so plugged when I ran cleaner backwards through it, it sprayed out of little ting holes!

I highly recommend this as a maintenance item for these old cars.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - raysorenson - 11-24-2015

Absolutely. I've pulled them out of 2 '85 617's, an '87 603, a '92 602 and a '98 606. All were clogged, all lost power at low fuel levels.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 11-24-2015

I never noticed the loss of power, but I very rarely let it go below a quarter tank.

Still hoping to do the 603 this winter, but time will be the biggest factor.

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 01-24-2016

Well I am almost done with the climate control delete! Not as tough as I thought, but took awhile to get all the wiring figured out so I could minimize extra wiring. Pics to come whenever I get it totally done,
Probably a week or two out yet.

In the mean time I have been making a clutch for my pulling tractor. As aftermarket clutches have to be custom made and are very expensive, I decided to try to make my own. I took the stock pressure plate spring dimensions, entered it into century springs online spring finder and came up with a spring close to the same dimensions, but nearly double the rated pressure. After installing them I realized the stock cast fingers were not going to handle the huge plate load. So I made my own "billet" fingers Big Grin made with a grinder and a piece of 1/2" plate. Here's some pics for fun.

Top is stock, middle is what I started with and the bottom is the finish product

RE: 300D build thread (finally) - MFSuper90 - 01-28-2016

I noticed that you fab a lot of your own stuff too EDH, I think that's awesome! Some things don't need to be as precise as many think.

I'm hoping the clutch will hold the power, if not I will have to create a dual disk. But I think the transmission shaft will break before this clutch slips. 8500lbs tractor with big tires takes a lot of clutch and power to move

Well, I was planning on getting a big MW pump and selling my 603, but neither has happened. I bought a truck the other day and it's probably gonna tie up any funds that I would have originally have for the car.

Thanks! And yup, 2014 2500 6.7 cummins, g56 6spd.
I've been looking for one for a while and finally found one I liked.
Down the road I'll probably get the Emissions deleted, put a dual disk in it, and tune it. That should put it right around 500hp and 1000+ ft. Lbs. that'll be plenty for what I'll be towing
