Machine it out just a little bit. Cut an insert band slightly larger than it needs to be. deep freeze the ring, press it in.

So we have some progress!

Flywheel has been completed. Dimensions checked with it fitted and I think we are all good Smile It now needs to go for balancing.

Couple of small errors fixed. One mine - recess too big was solved with ring as per earlier suggestions (machined to 0.05mm and then frozen to get it in - thanks for the advice again guys!). The other was the machine shop that drilled the bolt holes (my bridgeport is out of action), they screwed up and drilled 2 at the wrong spacing (even professionals get it wrong of course!).. also fixed with a plug in each and I think a good save.

Sweet! Don't sweat the bolt patterns, I just drilled a flywheel to 12x130mm instead of 12x103mm. I'll just call it light weight as it has 31 holes in it now Tongue

Its been fun too Smile

I certainly learned a couple of lessons:

1) most-anyone can work in 10th of mm with care, but working to 100ths separates the engineer from the tinkerer!

2) Verniers are called 'very-nears' by the professionals for good reason when 1)

3) Carbide tooling rocks and WNMG inserts do 90% of most operations I needed to do

4) I know what I'd do differently next time around. My W123 estate could be epic with another of these .. maybe with a HE351VE and controler from Ole .

5) Spending every night 20 miles away in your workshop is a real test of you wife's patience and the very foundations of your marriage (both remarkable Smile - I won't test it with 4) anytime soon.

More updates to follow!

+1

My vote for best post of, at least, today. And one for best thread of the year, it has a certain "sticky" feel to it;-D

I figure you're either a professor or a philosopher because your machining skills are obviously "lacking."

Congrats and YES please keep feeding the monster. It isn't capable of synthesizing pics on its own...

sorry for lack of posts guys, just work keeping me away from it!

I have pistons being coated ATM though, will post back on a new thread to show the results.

I'll be back on this once everything has been balanced in a couple of weeks.
