84 and 85 turbo compatibility - cho - 03-20-2013

I'm considering import of used turbo for my 84 300sd
been offered turbo from 85 w123 wagon..

those two look different so I would like to know more
about compatibility issues I might come across during swap..

That hunk on the 85 is some kind of emissions control device. There is a vacuum line coming off of it that you can plug up. I should think it will be quite compatible and an easy swap in. Just make sure to check if it spins and that the fins aren't all banged up with a wobbly shaft.

Might try checking the turbo thread at the top of the engine sub-forum, it should show if there are any major differences

The second pic looks like a california setup. It's just mounted in a different position though.

Both will work, air valve limits turbo boost,so turbo comes on smoother.Use earlier version if possible.
