stripping down OM617? - jenyus - 01-19-2013

im putting the '80 OM617 i just picked up in my jeep. I want to strip off as much extra stuff as possible, specifically vacuum lines. I dont know much about the vac system on this car, but diesels dont usually need this many vac lines. my 81 peugeot 505 diesel doesnt use any.

The only necessary vacuum line is for the shutoff.

RE: stripping down OM617? - larsalan - 01-19-2013

what about the trans vac line? You might argue the shutoff vac line is useless. You could replace it with a shutoff cable or something.

What about the trans vac line? I'm using the keep ax-15 manual trans.

I found a way to do an electric shutoff on the motor to get rid of the silly vacu shutoff which only works about a third of the time for me

Then it sounds like you don't need any of it at all. I thought some people here were trying to delete the vac pump all together and put a block off plate in its place.
I cannot find the thread(s) Sad

Check my build threads for a vac blockoff. If your vac pump works, you want to sell it and buy materials for a blockoff-vac pumps can go for like $6,000,000

You can use a choke cable to pull the linkage into the stop position, and block off the vacuum shutoff hole in the IP.

The EGR system isn't required for driving. With a boost/ egt gauge you can pull the ALDA from the top of the pump.

While you have the engine out install a bock heater, just be sure to heat the plug in the block-it can crack the block if it's dead cold.

If the vac pump is deleted completely and a blanking plate put in it's place what works the brake servo?

Electric vac pump (if it fails, you don't get random parts in your engine)

or

Install bigger master cylinder and have manual brakes

or

Install hydraulic booster from a truck

I plan on going the bigger master cylinder route

Newer ford diesels use an electric vac pump, they run about $80 on eBay here in the us. Hydro assist is nice as well, my friends truck uses that, but ou have to source a special booster for that.

Keep the engine driven vacuum pump for the power brakes! Its simple and works great vacuum line from the pump to your brake booster one check valve. that's it

KISS= keep it simple stupid

RE: stripping down OM617? - jenyus - 01-24-2013

Yeah I'm definitely gonna keep it! I kept it when I did my Peugeot dieSel swap on my rock crawler and I'm glad I did

you might also look at getting a head off of an 82-85 OM617. or maybe just the Cam, Cam risers, etc... They provide more valve lift which allows the engine to breath better and makes more power.

that's how I ran it in my car. It still needs a vacuum source to run.

You can also run a line into the cabin and pull on it with a syringe to shut it down.

$6,000,000 Huh That`s more than I paid for my Car.
