You already got the best air filter box in there already. You just need to tune other items to get more performance out of your engine.

630CFM is damn good for a stock box. Anything else (i.e. K&N Filter) would actually restrict flow.

I'd be willing to bet the K&N will outflow the stocker, probably by at least 100cfm, but it wont provide any more *usuable* flow for an engine that is not fairly-well modified... They also do not filter as well as the stock unit, a lot of offroaders don't use 'em anymore after finding silt in their intakes.
The only real advantage with a k&n stock replacement is the reusable aspect of it, but I'd still rather go paper filter to ensure no dirt gets into my intake...

I was referring to the common K&N cone type filter like the setup you find on eBay. If K&N made a filter specifically to this box, then yes it will probably flow better with the drawback of not filtering as well. .

Is it normal not to hear the turbo at all?

yeah, with the stock unit you wont hear much..especially with how loud the rest of the engine is...

A K&N will flow more air at the expense of having a much shorter engine lifespan.

Look here to see what K&Ns suck so bad: http://duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm

The best filter is what you have already. Its flows more than your engine needs, it filters very well, its a true cold air intake, the filter is cheap and its extremely easy to maintain.
