MB Auto transmission bellhousing to adapt gs5-39dz ? - fcp - 11-28-2012

I know a few members have done the conversion of the MB gs5-39dz gearbox by cutting or milling existing manual trans bellhousing from MB and welding to cut-back BMW trans and I am currently considering the same for a OM606 Gwagon conversion (maybe GS6-53 though).

I was wondering tonight though - Looking at a the old auto transmission that came with my donor 606, the bellhousing from this is removable and once parted out leaves what could be a bolt-on 'front half' to an adapter plate welded to the cut back MB trans.

Without measurements from MB whether the longitudinal dimension would work- I don't know - for example how deep the 'front' half of solutions like the one Savitas used http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/thread-3394-page-2.html are? 150mm perhaps is too much?

I have searched though and haven't seen anyone else try this - is there an obvious thing I am missing here?

Definitely save that. Some careful measuring and some basic mill work will make it into a nice adapter.

Try to place removed MB tranny part next to gs5-39dz and you find out 150 is more than too much Wink

Yeah that's what I figured might be the problem.

At the least I guess I can do what you did and use this as the MB donor.

The alternative I guess might be a custom flywheel with bigger offset for pilot bearing to allow it to project further into a deeper bellhousing?

Scratch that idea, I just took another look at the setup... it would be a deeeep flywheel Big Grin

So how much of the donor MB bellhousing did you use then? I guess I need to buy the BM gearbox and understand by looking myself.

You will need about 10 cm of MB housing. This is a photo of fully prepared BMW housing:
