Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - bt1211 - 11-12-2012

Hello,

I'm new to diesels and turbos but not new to cars.

I have a 84 CD coupe(w/ 136,000 miles) that I would like to get to appox 200 hp. I am aware that the stock engine produces about 120hp, so I reason that 75 to 80 more hp wont kill it. I know, 200 ponies is small potatoes to most here but I want to learn as I go. I am aware of this fantastic thing called "torque" but I used hp numbers to keep it simple.

Of course, I need to start with a correctly tuned engine (i.e. valve adj, timing, check chain stretch and what else?) After that, what are the best, PROVEN ways to achieve my goals?

There is a lot of info here for people with High HP dreams but for neophytes like me, I thought this thread would be the starting point.

thanks,
bryan

Aside from the things you already listed, you can get some more performance cheap by adjusting the ALDA all the way our or removing it, adjusting the turbo up to about 12 lbs (manual boost controller), and cutting out the mufflers and replacing them with straight sections of pipe. This stuff should make the car much more drivable and fun to drive

Yea,
1.straight exhaust
2.alda delete
3.egr delete
4.boost gauge

and 200 hp is not small potatoes for om617 that is not far off the upper limits.

There is a thread on turning up the stock pump. If you want them big tq/hp you need fuel and the air to burn it. So, stock pump tuned way up, pyrometer in the exhaust mani, and prolly a new turbo.

So, anyhow plumb in a new turbo and get that pump to spit more #2. Till then do the basics and drive it like you stole it Wink

Thanks for the replies gents.

It would help by attaching a link to this thread on how to do those mods. That way those who come behind me will have a convenient place to see what is involved.

Here is the thread about adjusting the IP(it's at the top of the engine page)

how to do the egr delete

I have seen how(and where) to add a boost gauge/ manual controller and I will post a link when I find it again.

how and where should you add the pryo?

RE: Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - larsalan - 11-14-2012

tee the boost into the line at the back of the intake mani
here is a good preview of egr deleting

some people swap out to other manifolds and whatever it takes to plumb on new turbo.
I just say get that hot gas out of your intake asap Wink

P.S.

No, I'm not trying to get anyone to do my research. I have lurked on this site for a while and read some cool/ interesting things but now that I'm ready to do a few mods, I've don't remember where I saw all the cool stuff.

I thought I would leave a sign post for the next guy/gal

You have diesel emission test where you live? Or is the benz old enough to skip it?

RE: Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - sassparilla_kid - 11-14-2012

I got my boost controller from eBay I believe the company was NXS or something like that, I just remember it was the cheapest one

RE: Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - bt1211 - 11-14-2012

Larsalan

no emission test for diesel in IL(at least not for an 1984)

I'm going to be diplomatic here and put this lightly: Don't remove the ALDA, that's just plain stupid :-)

RE: Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - larsalan - 11-15-2012

and why is that?

RE: Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - raysorenson - 11-15-2012

Do you want me to just copy and paste MB's explanation of the ALDA's operation or are you looking for original material here?

RE: Need help with basics for 617 engine mods - Simpler=Better - 11-15-2012

There's a lot of debating over the ALDA-if you have it properly tunes you will see full power and will not lose any MPG from accidental overfueling.

If oyu remove it, you gauruntee full fuel on demand, but run the risk of overfueling when there's no boost, which wastes fuel, hurts your mpgs, and raises your exhaust temps.

personally, i removed my ALDA because I know enough to only give it half pedal until the boost came on. YMMV

Thanks guys but this project hit a snag last night.

As I was on the highway it lost oil pressure and I was not able to get the shoulder in time(considering I just checked the oil on Monday I'm not 100% on how/why it lost oil). After owning about 20 plus cars over the years, this is the first time I had one run out of oil as I was driving it.

So time for a replacement engine. If anyone has a lead on one let me know(I'm in Chicago).

Any links to anyone putting a later Benz turbo diesel into a w123?

thanks,
bryan
