300d w123 heater core info - larsalan - 10-19-2012

Anyone got any info on heater cores for the w123 300d?
I wonder can you get a new one? Used? And how much dashboard needs to come out to replace it.
Pictures and links please and thank you.

There's a bunch on PP and there was just a thread on buying a new one. You got to remove the dash. Period.

Well, maybe I take the dash off and look into the problem. Steam blows all out the vents and coolant is on the floor boards if I run the blower.
Maybe this is the part for just $60

It's 126... You should be able to find the right part for around that price though.

Something tells me that tutorial is a little too in depth and has a lot of unnecessary steps

I tore apart a w123 dash before and that's just about how much trouble I remember it being. I'm back to thinking I may just let it ride as is. I have way too much other work to do to open that can of worms.

I can tell you from experience that it's pretty accurate, for pulling the manual climate control out of a 240D. Maybe you don't really need to pull the steering wheel. But the rest of it...yup. It's an all-day job. Or, if you do it in a wrecking yard to which you must commute, as I did...it took me two days.

Holy cow ! what a job ... If you go this route, I would replace everything that goes bad, e.g., those damn vacuum pods, et cet.

Yep. When eventually I get around to putting the 240D manual climate control in my own 300D, since it'll be bare right down to the firewall, I'm planning to not only renew the evaporator and pods, but moreover to put some cork, rubber, and formica soundproofing layers on the firewall. And add two or three holes with grommets in the firewall, for purposes of routing plumbing for boost gauge, EMP gauge, et cetera. Might even engineer-in a cabin filter.

RE: 300d w123 heater core info - larsalan - 01-05-2013

Ripped out the dash today and extracted the heater core. Found some other generic core on amazon for like $9. Plan to slop it in there, run the plumbing, patch the dash back on and then hope it can make a few degrees.
By god that dashboard hvac shit is a fucking mess. If it weren't so cold here I would have deleted that all together.
Somehow the battery went low/dead while I was fucking with all that stuff. Maybe the trunk light did it. And the glow plug dash light doesnt wanna light so we'll see just wtf is up with that soon.

Check your grounds. I was going to suggest a heater core floating in the cabin with hoses out the window....but that's just me.

RE: 300d w123 heater core info - larsalan - 01-07-2013

Another bit that got knackered...
The wipers. They have never worked on the lowest ('intermittent') setting. Always worked fine on the higher 2 settings and when you sprayed the wiper fluid they would go a few times.

Now some wires got jiggled out of place. It the wipers won't return to the down position when you turn them off, they just stop wherever they were at.
And when you spray the wiper fluid they dont wipe. This thing is slowly disintegrating.

Wipers are controlled by a relay under the hood I thought?

RE: 300d w123 heater core info - Simpler=Better - 01-07-2013

Double check those connectors under the dash. It's frustrating my signals were messed up and would go crazy when I used the headlights once.
