Used motor oil? - Raptelan - 10-02-2012
I have several hundred gallons of used motor oil. Is there anything useful to do with this? If not, who can I call to come drain my tank?

You can mix it with diesel and and use it as fuel in your MB. I have a customer who I rebuild injectors for and he burns it every day. Just filter it ... lots of super fine grit in the oil. 200 gallons x $4.00 = $800 worth of fuel.

You think that's safe for the engine? I wondered... What's a good economical way to filter that much dirty oil? Would I be better off selling it to some company that recycles it? Sadly all my diesels are currently down for the count and I'm stuck driving a 450 about a hundred miles a day for the time being...but hopefully that changes soon

He indicated he drives a lot, e.g., up to 100K miles a year and has been burning it for a while. The injectors are funky BUT they get that way with 100 miles or 10,000 miles on WVO or anything not exactly diesel. I would filter it. Heat it to 180 F, Centrifuge it, and my guess is that it will look like really dark honey. Not sure how much to thin it down, but he indicates he runs the crap out of it. I have never burned it myself. I have burned well over 1,000 gallons of WVO during a 3 1/2 year period and NEVER an issue. WMO may be the same.

look up waste motor oil collection in your area. I use a company called "Western Oil Co." which is local to me, but theres a company who will do this pretty much anywhere there are auto shops (which is every city in the US
), and it should be a free service. The used motor oil has value for them in things like asphalt production, and recycling processes, so the majority are free services. Just call around and see who's interested.
If its an ongoing collection of oil, they will want to set up a rotating schedule, but most places will come by on one time basis's and vacuum out your tanks after testing that its not contaminated or anything.

the question is emissions though when you do this. Ive heard horrible things about WMO emissions, which has always stopped me from doing it, and just sticking with WVO instead.
It would be interesting to know what your customer sees out the pipe, has he ever had the emissions tested out of curiosity?

I am sure the emissions aren't the best. I certainly would not want a snout full of that smoke ! LOL. Motor oil is designed NOT to burn, so I am sure there is something funky going on. He says he drives an incredible number of miles and never a problem. His injectors were very, very funky, but it drove.

a bit out of time but ...
I used WMO for some time mixed at a ratio of 1/1 or 1/1/1 with diesel and jetA, and my 605 N/A didn´t like it very much....
Mixture was done and after filtered in 20 mícron filters . used directly in the tank. no special issues, except the 20% less power.
good cold start , barely any smoke, no special smell.
The engine condition decreased noticieably fast, after 80k Km had to rebuilt the engine due to premature damage in cylinders and rings.
Fortunatly the cylinders were still in useable condition but the step at TDC was impressive, almost .40 in diameter but still inside useable condition after repair , rings lost about 1mm radial size compared to new.
Cylinders were repaired, honed , and new rings in , and is still alive almost 100k after, with a lot of abuse ...
What we´ve found out was that carbon build in the piston grooves was so much that it forced the rings outwards and they wear out against the cylinder Wall. Apart from that only a lot soot in the engine oil passages like the engine oil was like 100years old.
Nothing else in the engine needed repair. My findings are compatible with some reserch done by some manufacturers in usage of heavy oil to power automotive engines.
Despite this bad experience, it was worth the savings , as in my planet we use to buy diesel at 1.30€ liter.

Interesting...wonder why you had less power, a cetane thing maybe? WMO would have greater calories/ml than diesel
I'm going to look at something like this one day, essentially a twin tank WVO system on WMO or ATF...don't like the thought of even mineral oil cold+thick in the injectors + lines
Water injection would/should/might prevent carbon buildup in the prechamber, piston rings and injector face
In an ideal world a bowl centrifuge would be what I'd use but I can't afford one, instead I would use a smaller "spinner" and leave it going for a month or so at a time. Experimentation needed as to how often the 'fuge needs cleaning out

Every oil change on my GF's car i take out a quart of transmission fluid and put a fresh one in. I take the old quart from her car and it goes right in my tank. Aside the fuel in my filter looking a little red I don't notice much.

I really wouldn't run it if I were you. From all I have read mb diesels don't much care for it. The ford idi diesels seem to handle it quite well for some reason from what I have read. If you have an idi or a friend with one then I would consider it. Obviously filter, centrifuge, mix, ect. If I were you though I would try and sell it. If you happen to have that much on hand it wouldnt be too hard.
Also I read an article a few years ago where a guy ran 8k miles of used motor oil through a 6bt cummins. Idk for sure if he took the necessary steps to do it as safe as possible or not but I have a strong feeling he did. Anyways he ended up taking the engine apart and it looked like absolute SHIT. It really needed a rebuild after all that.

I had a 200D w124 once, I had it running on 100% WMO for a whole winter (20.000km). Had the WMO from the truck workshop where I work. Oil change on a Mercedes Truck ist 40l of WMO that went straight into my fuel tank. After one week, the engine became hard to start in the morning, I had to turn it over for 30 seconds to get it going. I tried to leave the engine idling the whole day while I was working. But when I came back to it after eight hours, the engine was idling really badly and all the snow behind the car was black. I kicked the revs up and a huge bunch of unburnt oil blasted out the exhaust.
In the following spring, I removed the head to have a look at the engine. Suprisingly the pistons didnt look bad, but the prechambers were entrely blocked with ash.

Interesting! Goes to show how important centrifuging and water injection is to keep it all clean. Seems like the MB prechamber design does not do as well as swirl chambers, since there's smaller passages etc. Have got ideas for a '77 300D now though

I tried hydraulic oil. Mostly unused oil. 50:50 with diesel fuel.
Works fine and no smoke. Id say it has more power with oil.

i used to run a mix of diesel and wmo and/or wvo. always 50% or more diesel in my 240d. engine definatly had more power on wmo then wvo, and didnt smell funny. i did change my fuel filter every oil change, 3000-3500 miles. cant attest to what the engine looked like inside, but a comp check showed 1 cylinder low and 1 high, but still within spec. the other 2 were like 2 psi difference.
