Pilot bearing question - raysorenson - 07-26-2012

I'm in the process of doing an auto to manual swap on my OM603.

I measured the depth that the pilot bearing needs to be installed in the crank. I *can* push the bearing into the crank too deep for the input shaft to slide into the bearing. Can I just install it to the correct depth and not worry about it walking around in there or do I need to put a spacer behind it?

Bearing is to be press fit. Do use spacers. Outer bearing race should not spin in c/s. Can (dimple) inside of c/s with center punch etc.. OR use some sleeve lock or both. When driving bearing drive only on outer bearing race so bearing will not be damaged. This repair will only work if c/s hole is only a couple thousands to big.

Thanks for the tips. It was a tight fit in the crank and I did drive it in with a socket that matched the O.D. of the bearing. The loctite green is a good idea.

The trans is installed at present. I'm tempted to let it ride if I end up with a good feeling clutch pedal.

On my OM603 I used a W201 190E 2.3-16 manual transmission pilot bearing, spacer, & cap.
