210mm open diff w124 to LSD 2.47 - squirrelmaster - 07-23-2012

Will the ring, pinionand etc fit from a w126 diff into a 210mm w124 open diff housing? i have a complete 210mm open w124 diff and see the w126 560 sel 2.47 LSD for sale and it sure looks like things can happen and prob some other half shafts and can any one say which one will work?

Here's a longass thread from gsxr:
http://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w124/224048-limited-slip-differentials-w124s.html

I would hazard a no, I recall reading something to that effect in there.

What're you putting it in?

I do know that swapping the carrier in an earlier version w107/w116/w126 style 210mm case, the original gear size has to be 2.24 or 2.47 in order to make it work. With the other gear sizes, the casing internally is not shaped correctly to fit the 2.47 carrier.

So unless the original gears in the w124 carrier are 2.24 or 2.47, then there is a possible chance it will work. But with all other 210mm gear sizes, I highly doubt it will work.

Well let me tell u... It works took a 90 something 210 difE320 put the 126 ring pinion and lsd carrier with new bearings which were the same in either one set pre load, depth, back lash what a pain it was it was like takeing it apart again and again tho in the end i used all old shims from either one and bought only new seals and bearings crush collar on thr car its quiet and the 2.47 with the getrag 5 speed with 1:1 5th is perfect not noticable diff in speed till 4th and its a good difference not spinning fast like 3 grand at 80 i bielieve its like 2830 or something at 80 which is prob about 82 cause of the change from 2.65 to 2.47 so there u have it it works use a ring pinion and carrier from a lsd 126 in a 210 124 diff that was 2.65 origanally

Thanks for posting it worked out. Sad to see that 2.47 diff of mine was torn apart to make the swap, but very cool never less!

(09-16-2012, 05:51 PM)squirrelmaster Well let me tell u... It works...

Three questions:

1. Why did you choose the 2.47 ratio, over the 2.65?

2. Do you think it would work, to go the other way --in other words, to transplant the W124's 2.65 gears into the W126 diff?

3. Are the LSD's interchangeable between the two diffs?

RE: 210mm open diff w124 to LSD 2.47 - squirrelmaster - 09-18-2012

With the 2.65 diff and the gatrag close ratio 5 speed I was shifting into 5th at 40 mph driving around town and was turning 3 grand on thr high way plus the 2.47 had to be used with the lsd diff and now i dont need to shift as much. yes most def the 2.65 ring and pinion will work in a 210 diff from a 126 tho i do bielieve the carrier has to be used to from the same ratio. yes the lsd from a 2.65 210mm will work in a 126 u will need the ring pinion. and carrier plug it in set it and forget it .

Many thanks. Would the same be true of a Generation 1 W126? Or would the gear-swap from the W124 only go into a Generation 2 W126?

Cool. I've got a 1:1 top gear getrag myself in a W124 diesel and I've been thinking about this exact swap.

Questions:
Is there a speedo that both works with the 2.24 diff and drops into a W124 cluster?

When you set up the pinion, did you measure pinion depth?

Your best bet is to keep your current speedometer, figure out the % off and install a "ratio adapter" or Mechanical speedometer cable Calibration Box.

You can contact these guys to see if they can make a custom unit. Usually sells around 100 bucks.

BTW - I have access to two more 2.47 LSD's if anybody is interested. But probably not at the cheap price squirrelmaster purchased his diff from me.
