so swapping early W123 steel wheels for late 240D aluminum ones (not bundts, the kind with the classic hubcaps) would save something like 20 kg unsprung weight.

according to some excellent garage research done by Army ( http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1627395-unsprung-weight.html ) this should increase the sprung:unsprung ratio for the car from 6.0 to 6.8.

fred puhn seemed to recommend maximizing this number in "how to make your car handle" but he only cited scores of 2 ("very poor") and 5 ("good").

so: do you all think this is a worthwhile, or a useless mod?

I have 4 of these aluminum rims, with the dashes 5.5 (not the solid white line which is 6") and they are super light. I believe they reduce the weight by over 40 pounds. Anything to shed weight is good. Lighter the car, faster it should be.

i know we should always add lightness, but unsprung lightness is the better kind. 40 pounds is negligible inside the (sprung) cabin.

I replaced the steel wheels on our 240 with the Light Alloy 5 1/2" rims. finally found some in PNP.
took one steel and one Light Alloy to UPS and had them weighed. as I remember, the steel was 18 3/4lbs and the Light Alloy 9 3/4lbs.

There is a special Hub Cap clip for the Light Alloys that has some plastic on it to keep from gouging the aluminum.
