Help me setup my OM617 - Getandistr - 07-10-2012

So I am planning a conversion for my jeep Cherokee with an OM617. I am going to be connecting it to a SM465 and connect that to a NP231/D300 crawl box and finally 4.10 geared axles. I need help fine tuning the engine though as this is my first time working on a diesel let alone a Mercedes. I am trying to get some extra low end torque as well as maintain a relatively high mpg. I know that I'm not going to be getting the 30+ mpg that some people see since this will be a lifted vehicle but I'm hoping for at least low to mid 20's. So what would I need to do to get that low end power where the turbo spools sooner and still maintain or enhance my mpg?

Get a torque converter that lets the engine jump to the turbo spooling rpm easily. Have the turbo fully spooled even when you're not moving for max torque would sure be nice.

Or VNT it.

Thanks for the help but again I am very new to all this. First mercedes engine, first diesel, first turbo, etc. I found out what a VNT is but no idea how to make / where to get one. Any help please?

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Simpler=Better - 07-11-2012

It's not terribly hard to adapt a VNT-you just need to make an adapter plate (trace gaskets on some 1/2" or 3/4" steel and start cutting.) And adapt the oil inlet/outlet of the turbo-after that it just takes some messing with a boost controller and some vacuum lines to get it tuned properly.

VNT turbo of what size would be needed for 200hp?

how about this setup?
Diesel om617engine 5cyl with twin compound turbos (primary turbo t3 50trim .61 a/r , secondary turbo t4 57trim .96 a/r)

this is (theturbodave) 300td which im going to try copying.

A GT2256v would be easy to find but might fall short by a bit (190hp?). A GT23 would be nicer.

Course if you design a compound system right you won't need a VNT.

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Gearbound - 07-22-2012

where are gt2256v normally found? and can the mw pump support it?

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - aaa - 07-22-2012

They're on Sprinter vans. And I don't know what you mean by support, the stock pump will do it's usual hp fine.

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Gearbound - 07-22-2012

what is the max hp that the stock mw pump can run? ive read 170hp is mw pump stock fueling limit is this true?

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Simpler=Better - 07-23-2012

From the rumors I've heard you're going to need to modify the pump for more than 140hp / 190tq. If you want to go insanely large the Holset HE351VE is found on newer Dodge trucks

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Gearbound - 07-23-2012

I'm disappointed by how limited these motors are. so the pump have a maximum support of 140hp from the crank? so how do i get 100 more ponies out of the mw pump?

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - aaa - 07-23-2012

You swap the pump elements out.

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Gearbound - 07-23-2012

ugh and that cost more than the cars value...well im going back to cutting the valves.

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Simpler=Better - 07-23-2012

Make sure you're running an EGT gauge and a straight through exhaust, and be sure to report back Big Grin

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - raysorenson - 07-23-2012

Most complaints of "turbo lag" and lack of power are due to maintenance issues. Since you said you haven't worked on diesels much, I suggest you learn how to ensure your stock motor is in a good state of tune with the throttle linkage correctly adjusted before even worrying about modding.

RE: Help me setup my OM617 - Gearbound - 07-23-2012

I have checked all maintence items. everything from filters to valve adjustment and finished with linkage inspections and alda removal. and ill let yall know the outcome. from disassembling the spare pump i have it looks like there is plenty of adjustment for idle to be corrected after the dv are cut.
