What is this, why is it in my turbo - Torkey - 06-10-2012

Pulling apart my donor parts car and there is something bizarre in the exhaust part of the turbo. The car is an '85 300SD California version. Pretty certain is has to do with emissions control but it looks like it could really affect turbo performance.
Any one know anything about these?

It's a chunk of trap ox. It's not meant to be there. There's the reason MB gives you a free turbo during a trap ox recall.

If you still have the trap ox you can score a free turbo at the dealer. I know someone who literally towed his car in for it...

Lol awesome. That's the internals from the trap oxidizer as ^he said. It's basically a catalyst for a diesel. Mercedes had to put it preturbo to keep the temps up in order to keep the thing working. Unfortunately it causes the issue you have.
