4 wheel drive? - sassparilla_kid - 05-10-2012

I'm just curious, has anybody else ever wondered what these cars (w123 specifically) would be like if one could somehow manage to set one up with 4 wheel drive? I personally think it would be pretty sweet, since with oversized tires and stiffer suspension I'm sure one could go pretty much anywhere, well almost anywhere.

Considering the custom fabrication involved, Modified G-class stuff $$$$ or 4-Matic Modified Stuff $$$$. I bet I could get my wagon almost anywhere a awd car could go with my current ride height. I've driven my various cars out in the desert & the woods many times. A truck on the other hand no.. I do like 4-wheel burnouts though..

RE: 4 wheel drive? - serverman777 - 05-10-2012

How did you change up your ride height on your w123 wagon kozuka?

RE: 4 wheel drive? - Kozuka - 05-10-2012

Deleted the automatic (-200lbs), installed progskins SLS delete. That's made my ride height pretty high but somehow even, the rear seems to be caster'd abit. Seems like you could get more of a lift in the front on an automatic with w116 springs. They would have to be cut if you didn't want the pre-runner lifted front end. I think that a normal w123 would get a nice lift from w116 springs all around for off-road adventures. Still recommend that oil pan guard, too many engines lost to damaged oil pans, lowest damn point on the car.

I used to drive a lowered car all up and down county dirt roads too not really off-roading though. Big Grin

Hmmm... ideas are spring to mind...
Back to the 4x4 or all wheel drive. I would kill for my w126 to be all wheel drive.

The 300te 4matic Is 4X4 I wonder if the om603/om606 would fit in one????

RE: 4 wheel drive? - DeliveryValve - 05-10-2012

Probably the easiest way is to get a Toyota, Ford, or Chevy small truck 4x4 frame and bolt the w123 on top of that.

I've seen several examples of that type floating around the 'net in the past.

Looks pretty cool. Definitely not for the purest.

You stop posting online and get your damn w/m setup working that's how!!

Hahahahaha!!!!!!! Big Grin I've been busy with school these past couple weeks, since the end of the semester is near. I have everything needed for the W/M setup (finally, it took a whole day to just find a place that had the correct sized tap for the injector nozzle Undecided), and the first weekend I don't have school (finals are next week) I plan on installing it, along with the egr-less manifolds, and pyrometer. If this weekend wasn't mother's day I might get it done, but that doesn't seem like something I can really shirk off Confused. Also been too busy trying not to fail ALL of my classes lol, although I'm pretty sure that is going to be the case with physics

I've also been busy collecting parts for another project, but I'll post about that stuff when the time comes. Wink

More then likely the front subframe is different on a 4-matic car rather then a normal w124 along with a number of other things like hubs mounting for the transfer case, oil pan, the list goes on and on. For a w124 the full-oem conversion could be possible but for the w123 since there was no oem awd
its going to be like re-inventing the wheel.

RE: 4 wheel drive? - aaa - 05-10-2012

It's pretty different from a regular 124 even, some pics here:

That would be sweeeeetttt!!!!!!! The resulting car would be able to go from city driving to off road driving and then jump into a rally lol. Now if only I had money to tackle such a project.....

RE: 4 wheel drive? - Captain America - 05-18-2012

The W123 is VERY capable off road.... http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/thread-1513.html

RE: 4 wheel drive? - sassparilla_kid - 05-18-2012

Bitchin' thread, I need to properly re-route my veg lines so they're not hanging down under the car, so that I can do that sort of crazy shit lol. Hmmmm, Maybe after I get new tires, I can get an extra set of some cheap steel 15"-ers with some knobby oversized tires for off road fun lol

RE: 4 wheel drive? - Captain America - 05-21-2012

Wink

I have Firestone Destination A/T's on my 300. Grip for daysssssss

RE: 4 wheel drive? - DeliveryValve - 05-21-2012

theres one near me for 600 bucks, an 84 quattro. Supposedly those have a push button locking rear diff. Waffling, its a heap, but the guy says engine ran, 4 wheel drive worked, and I could use that 2.2. Big Grin

We will see, the quattro stuff could be fun to play with.

RE: 4 wheel drive? - sassparilla_kid - 05-21-2012

Too bad I live on the complete opposite side of the country, and that I don't have money, because I would be all over that deal!
