OM617 N/A to Turbo - Robert_UAH - 04-16-2012

I have a '79 300TD I bought for $200 which the owner said oil starvation problems but I am not sure I believe him. Should I try to get the engine running and add turbodiesel bits OR just get a turbo diesel and drop it in?

I would swap the turbo diesel in if that's what your after! It has stronger rods/pistons a hardened crank and piston squirters it is a lot stronger in the long run!

I would still check and see if you can get it running but a turbo engine is far more reliable in the long run under boost

If I get it running, what should I do with the engine?

A whole turbo engine is the cheapest way to get it turbo'd. Or run the NA engine as is.

Take it out and build a bad ass home generator with it

My friend was gonna do this with a 616 and run it on veg, and use it to power the 500 gallon biodiesel processor he was building. Unfortunately that project got put on hold so he never went through with it

Would you swap transmissions or just stick with the one in it?

The transmission should work with the turbo engine
