aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 04-15-2012

My dad made a good point earlier, why not just add an aftermarket/electric overdrive instead of going through so many hoops to get a 5th gear?

This seems like it would be a whole lot easier than having to swap transmission guts or cut/weld different bell housings and making sure everything is aligned properly

Just a thought

RE: aftermarkt overdrive? - larsalan - 04-15-2012

what the hell do you mean? How are you electronically going to change the gearing between the motor and your wheels?

RE: aftermarkt overdrive? - aaa - 04-15-2012

With a box that sits between the driveshaft and transmission. The driveshaft will have to be modified of course.

RE: aftermarkt overdrive? - larsalan - 04-15-2012

As in between the trans and rear end, right? Just like a 2 speed rear for a truck would be.

RE: aftermarkt overdrive? - JustPassinThru - 04-15-2012

Not at all far-fetched. A neighbor of mine has a Dodge Ram, with the 5.9 Cummins, dualies on the rear axle; it has --um, I forget, either a 5- or a 6-speed original transmission. To which he added an after-transmission second gearbox, from a Mack truck. There's a splitter on the stick shift, so he has either 10 or 12 forward gears total. Before he retired, he used to haul fully-loaded full-size car-transport trailers up to and from Alaska with it.

RE: aftermarkt overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 04-16-2012

Yeah I think if one could find one for cheap enough this would be much simpler than trying to make what would essentially be a "Franken-transmission", since it seems all you would really need to do would be to modify the drive shaft and come up with some sort of mounting brackets. Now I just need to find a cheap place to find these and do it lol

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - Got Poof - 04-16-2012

Might want to check gearvendors.com they specialize in electronic bolt on overdrive units. They cost more than most of us paid for our cars though Also I know Volvo made a manual gearbox with a electric overdrive factory installed on the back.

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - willbhere4u - 04-16-2012

I was thinking the electric over drive from a Volvo 240 would be fairly strait forward modification it essentially bolts on the rear of the transmission some kind of bracket would need to be fabricated along with a drive shaft in and out of it!

I checked them out, yeah they are pretty expensive lol

I'll have to start keeping my eyes open when for these volvos when I go to the yards from now on, this seems like the most plausible solution for one of these overdrives
Are the overdrives found on all Volvo 240 cars, or just certain models?

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - w123love - 04-16-2012

If you do find what model they are in, there are over 100 Volvos to choose from near me. I’d be happy to help experiment with this idea

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - willbhere4u - 04-16-2012

A lot of the 1980's Volvo 240 4spd cars had them look on the shift knob for the switch
If you wire it up correctly you can over drive every gear then you would have 8 spd

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 04-17-2012

So it appears we are searching for 200 series Volvos from 1974-93 with the M46 transmission, this is the one with the electrical overdrive unit installed from the factory. Not totally sure if it was an option all of those years or just some, but at least its a start.

As for the whole 8 gears thing, I'm not sure what I would really need 8 gears for, I guess it might come in handy at some point though lol

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - larsalan - 04-17-2012

Shit, that's kinda the advantage of having that 2 speed shaft right. Pick out a good diff gear and maybe you can use like 6 of them.
Get a short rear like 3.87 or whatever they are. I've seen that shit on 240 or old ass 300d na. That's leave you a nice granny low Wink

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - willbhere4u - 04-17-2012

It would be nice for towing a trailer

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 04-17-2012

Granny gear would be awesome for pulling stumps, and I would like to hopefully be able to pull my boat at some point if I ever get a hitch made up for the car

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 04-17-2012

Haha I don't even want to think about what I would have to do to get the speedo working properly with one of these, especially if I put in a different rear end

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - yankneck696 - 04-17-2012

Old Studebakers have a bolt on OD unit, too... Screw the speedo, use GPS...

Ed

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - willbhere4u - 04-17-2012

My guess is the Volvo unit probably had the speedo cable at the back of it as well??????

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 04-17-2012

That would make sense, if I actually get around to doing this I'm sure we will find out! Big Grin

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 05-03-2012

Muahahahahaha, I have sourced an overdrive unit for free!!! Turns out the rusted-out-beat-to-hell (from his descriptions) volvo my friend has is equipped with the M46 with the overdrive from the factory, and since he said he will be taking the car to PnP in a month or so I could have it free of charge!!

Everybody I've told about this plan has been like "why put an OD on a manual??", I guess they just don't understand diesel mercedes and the whole super-high-revving thing that they have going on while driving at highway speeds.

Anyway, I will keep everybody posted and try to document everything to the best of my ability for future reference, and create another thread in the "drivetrain" section of the forum for this whole project

Gear Vendors Overdrives suck.

Did you ever put this OD in your driveline?

You could also put a transfer case in backwards, so that you would have a 1:1 "low" and a 1:1.96 "high"

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - sassparilla_kid - 02-05-2013

No I haven't tried it yet, I might in a couple months once I get my w116 up and running though

And that would be like super overdrive lol

Id be interested to see if it fits in the driveshaft tunnel, take a few pics for us. From what ive been reading, those things are like 9 inches across.

I see that as the biggest single problem getting a component like this fitted into a MB body. The tunnels are pretty tight

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - led-panzer - 02-05-2013

Who doesn't like a tight tunnel...

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - Mark_M - 02-05-2013

My original Scimitar gearbox had an overdrive on it. It effectively turned the box into an 8 speed box but using it in anything other than 3rd and 4th would rip it apart. Be careful what you get and make sure it can take the torque or it will be horribly unreliable. Probably easier and cheaper to get a 5 speed or better to be honest but the choice is yours.

RE: aftermarket overdrive? - DirtDiesel - 02-05-2013

ive heard of regearing a transfercase and turning it around. so if you could set yourself up with about a 20%-30% overdrive could be an interesting outcome. are we trying to find a splitter for an automatic. cuz if its a standard you could go with the torque splitter online. i believe they come with a 27% overdrive, and fit between the bellhousing an transmission. just some idears
