Several questions about om606 and 3.2 cdi - xgroundel - 02-10-2012

Hi , I'm new in this forum , so excuse me if i'm wrong in something..

From few weeks I am saving money for one idea that come to my mind... First of all I wanted to buy Subaru Impreza or Nissan 200sx or 300ZX. Petrol cars which I can moderate and have at least 400hp of petrol engine, but there is some problem..I am a fan of diesel engines and massive torque ,so I decided to have a om606 engine or 3.2 cdi
I read several threads and finally I can't understand which engine is better... For you to reply to me ,may need some info what I need from this engine... My perfect target is 500hp. I need that engine to put it in w124 sedan or coupe chasis and will go to drag races.

So.. I read about 3.2 cdi that it is stronger in the inside and low rev
and about the om606 that it is weak in the inside and higher revs I have om606.912 in w210 which maybe is weaker than om606.962 and if it's needed I can buy turbocharged 3.0 diesel.

There is the biggest problem already...Where I can find parts for these engines...cuz the only reason that I have to choose petrol is the easier way to find parts..

And can you give some tips about tuning the two engines...

Thank you for the lond reading Smile

Why noone is replying ? Sad

"Why noone is replying ?" Perhaps because very few people have tuned *both* an OM606.912 *and* an OM606.96n. The .96n is the newer, therefore in my opinion better OM606 engine.

You should do a search on "OM606" and read through the already-existing threads. You will find a member named "Jeemu". Jeemu is the world expert on tuning the OM606 engine to 500 hp. Perhaps you can PM him. But Jeemu doesn't speak great English either. So you will have much fun communicating. If you speak Finnish, then you are in luck!

"Where can I find parts for these engines?" The wrecking yard, of course. Or Craigslist, or eBay. Or Peachparts.com's forum. Or the benzworld forum. Or the mercedesforum forum. Or the MBZ dealership. Or the forum members here who work on OM606 engines.

Hope this helps.

Nothing beats the OM606.962 regards rpm and toughness! Smile
Try to get an 320cdi to rev past 7kWink

Hm now I am surely stopped at om606.962 for several reasons. Revs more, sounds nice, it's cheaper , it's perfect for w124..but that chasis will be interesting with 3.2 cdi don't you think so? Big Grin I definately will buy some nice chasis and put the om606.962 ,only don't know with which transmission... Smile

Depends on what you want to do with the car and what power goals you have.

I have a 320CDI with A/T but if there was a suitable manual gearbox capable of 800+Nm I would prefer manual...

"hansebanger77" here on forum has a w124 with om606.962 and 400+hp/730Nm. He uses manual 6spd gearbox from some 220 CDI engine because the 5spd gave up frequently...

A/T is fine for drag strip and any other straight forward acceleration and fine for comfy daily driving, but not very suitable for any kind of race track racing....at least not in stock conditions.
With external gearbox controller and shifting paddles although this will possibly be a total different kind of story....

In general the stock A/T gearboxes seem to hold up more torque than any stock manual gearbox, additional to that, there are more upgrading parts available for A/T than for M/T....

Hm, I said that I will use the car for daily driving and some drags, cause the massive torque of the diesel.

So the 6 spd from 2.2 cdi is good enough for 400-500 hp and around 690-780 Nm torque.. ? Smile

I don't know very much about transmissions... If I use the original auto trans from the 606.962 engine what should I change to make it more reliable and tough?
