What all do I need to do to change the gearing of my rear end?
Just swapping gears or do I need a diff case and axles?
oh, I guess the 2.47 is too short?

RE: how to change a rearend - JB3 - 10-03-2011

It will be way easier to just swap the whole unit case and all vs changing the gears in the case. Then you wont have to muck about with things like setting and shimming the gears and adjusting lash to make it quiet. Its only 4 bolts into the rear subframe, and then two bolts holding the mount that attaches to the cover.

Fairly easy with the exception of possible rust problems, the studs point up and are held in place by nuts on the top of the subframe, so its a pain in the ass if you have rusted seized nuts on top of the subframe which is not super easy to access.

The axles if they are one piece come out by removing the diff case cover, and pulling the circlips our of the end of the axles, then you can completely remove them.

heres a thread with some pics of the studs-

You'll also have to swap out the input flange from the 3.07 to the 2.47. The 2.47 has a larger flange and to swap it out, there is a special procedure.

Yep. For that rear, you'll need a ratio adapter spliced in your speedo cable to correct the speedo.

Wont fit correctly in a W123 cluster. It'll look like ass.

Oh. Well. There's an app for that. I had to use it for a few months while my speedo didn't work.
