Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Giffels - 08-28-2011

Crawled under my 1985 300d and noticed that one of the metal transmission cooler lines (passenger side) has a twist in it and I am afraid that it could possibly break so I want to replace it. I cannot seem to find the metal lines anywhere, az autohaus seems to have the front rubber piece of the hose (Link below)

https://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=4l3crje2ag4j0arajyqak3yh&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193790@300DT&year=1985&cid=33@Transmission/Transaxle%20System&gid=10343@Transmission%20Cooling%20Line/Hose

but they dont have the metal ones that I can see. Anyone have any idea where to get these metal lines?

thanks

It's either the dealer or junkyard. I have a 1985 300D and the one on the passanger side vibrated thru the metal clamp that holds it by the oil pan. The rubber part of the metal clamp was very easy to replace. Home Depot had almost identical hangers, just used the rubber part. I think the dealer will hit you up for about $197 a piece. You're right about leakage issues.

I have one if you're interesed. PM me. Thanks.

Try checking with Rusty.

Honestly I would just go to any junkyard. Any 300d will probably have them if the engine/trans is still in it.

yeah, ive bought this exact same part from Rusty in the past.

check out buy mb parts .biz
also fastlane,

and also you can get the part from the classic center in CA, which will give you a discount if you have a MBCA membership. (why I have one)

honestly though, its not an especially high pressure line, many people have done "temporary" repairs that last forever by cutting the line and slipping tranny cooler hose or other decent quality hose over the end, then double and triple hose clamping with some nice higher pressre clamps.

Dropnosky,

Do you have a rough guess as to pressure / PSI. I want to have an independent trans cooler -- not in radiator. I want to move it to the front of the A/C condensor. Any ideas ?

off the top of my head, im not sure except that its not especially high. I would not hesitate to add an extra cooler, or something external to replace the simple copper tube stock cooler.

I would be willing to bet the spec is in this thread/collection of threads somewhere-

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Greazzer - 08-31-2011

Do you think rubber hose and worm clamps would work on a temporary basis ? I am swapping radiator and I got a really nice trans cooler from a Hyundai. Has built in rubber mounts and it looks like its a stacked model vs. tube and fins. Its size is up there with the after market high end coolers. I just want to get some 100 psi hose with some clamps. Any guesses ?

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Captain America - 09-01-2011

Fuel injection hose (available at any parts store) will work fine with standard worm clamps... Hell, even low pressure fuel line will work. They will last for as long as you need. If you can use barbed nipples your set, if not then just double hose clamp an you should be fine.

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Hercules - 09-01-2011

Cut out bad section of tube, flare both ends some, install hose and clamps, permanent fix. Do use the fuel inj. hose as suggested. Temporary fix I have seen, split rubber hose install over hole and clamp at hole area.

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - DeliveryValve - 09-01-2011

I like using a small piece of fuel hose to use as bushings between the trans metal line and hanger clamp. The OE bushings are too thin and rot out easily which causes the hanger to rub a hole in the line.

.

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Greazzer - 09-01-2011

Yup, that is what happened to mine, rubber rotted out and vibration caused a slight hole in the metal line. A real PITA getting the whole metal line out and replacing.

Thanks Captain, et al, for the info. I will grap some HPFL for the trans cooler relocation project. I will start a thread on the radiator project. Very happy with my new 22"x20"x3" all aluminum "Be-Cool" radiator at $190 plus S&H.

(09-01-2011, 01:22 AM)Hercules Do use the fuel inj. hose as suggested.

Why? I have had Goodyear EFI rated hose as trans cooler lines for 5+ years with no issues...

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Hercules - 09-02-2011

I agreed with you,I thought?

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Captain America - 09-02-2011

OH! fuck me. read it as there was a "do not" Man thats bad Sad

RE: Metal Transmission Cooler Lines? - Hercules - 09-03-2011

WELL!! if you can make mistakes than so can I.lol.
