T3 to large for stock? - winmutt - 06-21-2011

So I got my HY30W for the w124 and it has a t25 flange. This was a bit of a surprise but it got me thinking. As far as I can tell the hy30w flows about 1.5 better than the stock turbo and at 1.5 more pressure. Each exhaust runner is slightly smaller than the t25. For stock fueling it seems to me that a t25 flanged turbo is a better match than the t3s.

As the t3 is used for some quite large turbos this leads me to believe that we are really on the minimum side of usability of the t3 flange. I am hoping the smaller flange makes for quicker spool without much impact on the back pressure. As you can see the t25 flange is about the same or a little larger than the 606.

If this works out well I think I will probably get a t25 flanged turbo for my w123 as well.

True there are some large t3 flanged turbos. I have a hx40 with a t3 divided flange. My hy35 is a single scroll t3 flange.

Finding a t25 flanged turbo isn't as easy and the selection isnt as great as the "standard" t3.

You will increase velocity but at the expense of turbo drive pressure and egts.

You can try a Mitsubishi turbo. Something like tdo4-4. Still a t3 flange but it's a newer design turbo. I have one at the shop I can take a few pics of.

I haqve always wondered why the T3 was used on the 617 since it doesn't flow anything really.

so my 617 uses a "standard" T3 flange?

Non EGR also uses the T3, same as the EGR manifold.

Take a look! http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/showthread.php?tid=1694&highlight=exhaust+manifold
