Hate those Leaky freeze plugs for sure! I've got one right behind the oil filter housing...

Your English has been incoherent the last few days. Whats changed?

Anyways, the discussion is moot, your baiting posts in my thread will be removed shortly.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - JB3 - 08-18-2010

whats the best way to repair the freeze plug on the car? Can you cover it up for now with some JB weld?

It can be replaced in the car, you just have to remove whatever is in front of it, in my case thats the injection pump. I've tried JB twice but the coolant makes its way through before the JB can harden. Its slowed significantly but there is still a pinhole left.

He said below 3200 that you have less torque than he does. Your dyno run is one gear right? On the street (as he said) this will prove to be more useful. Of course having the top end power that you do is useful as well. I personally would rather have the low end torque. I would imagine a slush box will make boost sooner through the rpms once you are going, but personally I will take the low end grunt any day.

Why don't you drain the coolant before you apply the JB? Or am I missing something... I believe they make little tools to remove the plugs when the engine is still in the car...

(08-19-2010, 02:06 AM)Captain America Why don't you drain the coolant before you apply the JB?
The cooling system in this engine already had a rust issue that was a royal PITA to clear up. I'd like to keep air exposure to a minimum so I don't have to go through that again.

In other news...

Disassembled and cleaned the leaking #2 injector and its finally sealed.
Pulled the #5 prechamber hoping to find the cause of the nailing and found nothing. The piston top looks good and the prechamber looks normal. Swapped in my good spare with no change to the sound. At this point its now a "live with it" issue. But at least its combustion nailing and not mechanical knocking like with the 240's engine.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 08-21-2010

The ignition tumbler finally jammed for good and left me stranded, only 2 miles from home.

I called AAA but the request of "bring a drill and 3/16 bit" pretty much made their brains explode. Three hours later the truck finally arrives. Then the tow driver damn near ripped a gash in the frame before I stopped him and pointed out the tow loops on each end of the car. To top it off I had to listen to his "9/11 was a conspiracy" bullshit the whole way home.

Now I've got go drive the other car to work, get my drill and get that damn steering lock out of there. Rolleyes

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - winmutt - 08-21-2010

That sucks. I've managed to get all mine fixed right before certain doom. Are you going to have it releafed or just carry two keys for it?

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 08-21-2010

It always had two keys. Drilling destroys the lock body so there's no way I can reuse it. I'll see if Tom Judd has one from his parts cars.

Here is the lock removal.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 09-25-2010

I found the source of #5's nailing, low compression.

Cold Hot
1- 300
2- 330
3- 340
4- 335 360
5- 250 275

Oh well, it runs well enough. I'll just have to live with it like I do my 240's knocking wrist pin.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - JB3 - 09-25-2010

(09-25-2010, 06:34 AM)ForcedInduction I found the source of #5's nailing, low compression.

That sucks, any idea whether its valve or ring related?

This may have absolutely no relevance to the problem at hand or how the MB valve operates since I have never played with them apart from adjustments, but on an old low compression straight six bronco I had, we were able to improve compression slightly by rotating the valves without breaking the whole motor down.
In that case, there was an issue with the valve seating across 2 cylinders.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 09-25-2010

I don't know. I'll have to build a leakdown tester to see where the air is going.
The 617 has rotocaps. Doesn't mean it still works though.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - willbhere4u - 09-25-2010

Try some bg 109 in some fresh oil for a week! We did it on a land cruiser 6 cyl and picked up 60psi in compression on one cylinder and like 10-20 on the others might help! My dads 6.9 ford non turbo really woke up after using it!
I guess it helps clean the rings!

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 09-25-2010

I think with the tank of B50 a few months ago, synthetic 15W50, no crankcase gasses going back into the intake, 6.6gph water injection (its used about 10 gallons so far) and daily Italian tuneups, carbon should pretty much be gone from the cylinders. Wink It still averages 23.4mpg too.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - willbhere4u - 09-26-2010

maybe it's some worn valves?

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 10-10-2010

Looks to be that way. The leakdown test has most of the air going out the exhaust pipe.

First post here, but I see so many of your posts over at PP.

FI, I am curious what 90 elbow you used for your air filter to turbo connection. Is it just a generic one, or did you cut the stock to 90?

Thanks.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 12-14-2010

I finally replaced that broken column lock to one from a junkyard 80 300D that still had the keys in it.

I also got a new toy from a GMC Topkick. Big Grin

5 years of junkyarding now and I have never ever seen a car with the keys in the ignition. I have found cars with keys and broken ignitions but never one that worked... Rare find.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 12-14-2010

Its fairly common if you look at every car, especially domestics. There have been occasions where I needed to stash something (don't want to carry it around the lot, for example) so I just put it in a car's trunk and lock it. Most people won't take the effort to force open a trunk. I even left a manifold in the trunk of a Volvo for a week before I remembered it! Big Grin

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - winmutt - 12-14-2010

Wierd, must be something my junkyard does (keeping keys).

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - 300D50 - 12-14-2010

Heh heh heh... I used to collect JY keys...

Till I had to rip a truck to pieces to find the key between the seats so I could uuse the door lock cylinders...

Hood stack?

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 02-14-2011

Only waiting on a 2-2.5 silicone boot to finish. I bought one on ebay but the seller screwed me over and never shipped after a week.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - yankneck696 - 02-14-2011

We used to use SS wire to attatch the keys to the column. Made us alot more money on the column sales & less destruction.

Water injection stages.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - ForcedInduction - 03-17-2011

Just a quick video accelerating onto the highway to test microphone placement. I'll get a good 0-60 video this weekend.

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - Imaginos - 03-17-2011

That sounds nice!

Is the fuel consumption figure still in this ballpark?

RE: ForcedInduction's 1982 300D - winmutt - 03-17-2011

Did you repaint the needles? The yellow on the gauges looks almost orange so I am assuming its original. Good god that is loud. Where is the mic, in the engine bay?

No wonder it sounds deafeningly bad ass. Does the iphone have a mic input or something?

and a generic omnidirectional mic.

i hate people who do that. every time i come across a w123 where someone did that, i make an extra effort to open the trunk up because obviously there is something good in there that someone wanted to bogart for themselves.
